CUBA — Six days removed from solid showings at the Montgomery County Early Bird Invitational, Matt Candrl’s Owensville High School (OHS) Track and Field squads made the short trek into Crawford County for the Cuba Relays at Cuba High School’s Wildcat Field of Pride.
It did not take long for a meet record to fall last Monday night at Cuba.
OHS senior Emma-Lee Wehmeyer won the girls 100-meter hurdles in a new Cuba Relays record time of 16.74 beating the previous record time of 16.88 held by Bourbon’s Callie Shelton from back in 2016.
Later in the meet, a pair of girls 4x100m relay teams broke the previous record of 54.05 held by Owensville’s foursome of Saylor Richardson, Cameron Nowack, McKenzy Echols and Emma Daniels.
Eldon won the race in 52.47 edging Owensville’s foursome of Brianna Bodine, Lilly Sample, Ariana Katsov and Wehmeyer who ran a second-place time of 52.66.
One more record fell on the track resulting in junior Zach Holtmeyer breaking his own Cuba Relays mark in the boys 3200m run.
Setting the meet record last spring with a time of 10:25.02, Holtmeyer won this year’s boys 3200m run in a new Cuba Relays record time of 10:22.10.
Dutchmen rounding out the top four in the boys 3200m run behind Holtmeyer included Cris Reyes (2nd, 11:30.82), Grayson Lairmore (3rd, 11:50.18) and Dylan Dietrich (4th, 12:04.86).
Adding to her record-breaking leg of the girls 4x100m relay, Katsov leaped her way into the Cuba Relays record book in the girls long jump.
Winning the event with a leap of 5.05m, Katsov set a new Cuba Relays record breaking the old mark of 5.02m held by Cuba’s Amber White from back in 2011.
Katsov’s mark also placed her fourth all time in school history just ahead of Dea Dea Sieckmann’s jump of 5.03m from the 2006 OHS Relays.
She also became just the fifth Dutchgirl to eclipse five meters in the girl long jump joining Angie Spurgeon, Nowack, Sieckmann and Daniels.
In addition to records falling at Cuba, OHS’ Dutchmen topped the team standings with 176 points while the Dutchgirls racked up 140 team points to place second behind Eldon’s Lady Mustangs who had 162 team points.
On the track for the Dutchmen, Mason McDaniel (2nd, 12.19) and Connor Wellman (4th, 12.25) scored team points for OHS in the boys 100m dash.
Fellow Dutchmen sprinting down the track in the boys 100m dash included Gianluca Brucculeri (14th, 12.63), Liam Rasmussen (16th, 12.73), Ricardo Marquez (21st, 12.83), Cohen Dare (23rd, 12.90), Steven Buddemeyer (25th, 12.94), Kien Bayless (26th, 12.99), Diego Lansford (30th, 13.24), Wyatt Bone (32nd, 13.30), Andrew Budnik (35th, 13.55), Bo Buddemeyer (36th, 13.55), Peyton Pohlmann (40th, 13.82) and Weston Baumill (49th, 14.80).
Charlie Katsov won the boys 200m dash for the orange and black in a time of 24.06 while McDaniel (3rd, 24.53) and Wellman (7th, 25.64) also scored team points for the Dutchmen.
Adding to his winning time in the boys 3200m run, Holtmeyer placed third in the boys 400m dash with a time of 53.53.
Drake Dietrich led three scoring Dutchmen in the boys 800m run with a second-place time of 2:15.14 followed closely by Steven Buddemeyer’s third-place time of 2:15.45.
Evan Reed also picked up a team point for OHS with an eighth-place time of 2:25.39.
Adding to his second-place time in the boys 800m dash, Drake Dietrich claimed another silver medal with a second-place time of 5:08.35 in the boys 1600m run.
Ty Price (8th, 5:51.66) and Dominick Eikermann (13th, 7:00.34) also ran four laps around the track for the Dutchmen in the boys 1600m run.
Charlie Katsov won the boys 110m hurdles in 17.13 while Daimeyn Rogers posted a fourth-place time of 20.12.
Christopher Kroon also scored two team points with his seventh-place time of 22.15 in the boys 110m hurdles.
Making up half of the top eight in the boys 300m hurdles for Owensville were Charlie Katsov (2nd, 43.19), Kroon (5th, 48.85), Evan Boyer (6th, 48.98) and Rogers (8th, 50.66).
Sprinting to a first-place time of 46.18 in the boys 4x100m relay for OHS was the team of Charlie Katsov, Rasmussen, Dare and Wellman.
Taking second for the Dutchmen in the boys 4x200m relay was the team of Steven Buddemeyer, Logan Valley, McDaniel and Rasmussen in a time of 1:38.77.
Also placing second for Owensville in the boys 4x800m relay with a time of 8:58.18 was the foursome of Drake Dietrich, Holtmeyer, Reyes and Lairmore.
Bone led OHS’ contingency of shot put throwers with an eighth-place mark of 11.75m.
Cullen Green (16th, 9.87m), George Wnuk (17th, 9.43m) Carson Eberlin (27th, 7.81m) and Rylee Schuchardt (35th, 6.77m) also posted marks for the Dutchmen in the boys shot put.
Budnik (2nd, 37.63m) and Ryder Wehmeyer (6th, 30.92m) scored team points for Owensville in the boys discus.
Tyler Menz also placed 15th in the boys discus with a throw of 23.68m.
Bone (3rd, 37.32m) and Kien Bayless (8th, 31.76m) picked up team points for Owensville in the boys javelin.
Kylen Menz collected a team point for OHS in the boys high jump clearing 1.70m.
Marquez (1st, 3.70m) and Valley (2nd, 3.35m) claimed the top two spots in the boys pole vault for the orange and black.
Adding to his win in the pole vault, Marquez also placed fifth in the boys long jump with a leap of 5.70m.
Brucculeri (7th, 5.38m),Valley (8th, 5.37m) and Bentley Luecke (9th, 5.35m) also placed in the top 10 of the boys long jump for Owensville.
Bodine (2nd, 13.34) and Abbey Quilacio (6th, 14.33) collected Dutchgirl team points in the girls 100m dash.
Ariana Katsov sprinted to a second-place time of 27.62 in the girls 200m dash.
Leah Hayes (6th, 1:12.16) and Ella Davidson (8th, 1:13.66) picked up team points for the Dutchgirls in the girls 400m dash.
Hannah Gehlert posted a pair of winning times in Cuba taking the girls 800m run in 2:43.41 and the girls 1600m run in 6:00.38.
Dutchgirls placing behind Gehlert in the girls 1600m run included Cylee Reed (12th, 7:41.33), Meredith Reed (17th, 8:10.36) and Morgen Schmidt (18th, 8:14.46).
Wehmeyer (1st, 51.39) and Bodine (3rd, 58.28) racked up 16 team points for the Dutchgirls in the girls 300m hurdles.
Taking fourth in 2:00.61 was the Dutchgirl 4x200m relay team of Violet Lavalle, Jordan Duncan, Halle Engelbrecht and Hays.
Ending the meet with a second-place time of 4:41.68 in the girls 4x400m relay was the Owensville foursome of Hays, Gehlert, Quilacio and Engelbrecht.
Rylee Dare scored eight Dutchgirl team points with a second-place throw of 27.90m in the girls discus.
Teammates finishing behind Dare in the girls discus for OHS were Lexis Manning (9th, 22.13m), Maci Armstrong (19th, 17.65m), Kinley Troncin (26th, 14.12m) and Lydia Wilson (31st, 8.18m).
Engelbrecht cleared 1.45m to place second in the girls high jump while Sample also cleared 1.45m to place fourth.
Quilacio (2nd, 2.70m), Arianna Baguio (6th, 2.25m) and Lavalle (8th, 2.25m) scored team points for the Dutchgirls in the girls pole vault.
Leola Hamann scored a team point for Owensville with an eighth-place leap of 8.34m in the girls triple jump.
