With districts looming around the corner, Owensville High School (OHS) wrestlers coached by Brandon and Dustin Howard ended their respective regular seasons during Thundering Herd Wrestling Tournament action in southwest Missouri at Buffalo High School.
Brandon’s Dutchgirls marked their final action last Friday night of regular-season wrestling in Buffalo before the upcoming Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 1, District 2 Wrestling Tournaments begins this Friday inside Mexico High School’s main gym at 5 p.m.
Placing 11th as a team with 41.5 points in Buffalo, the Dutchgirls were led by Rylee Dare who placed first at 145 pounds with wins by fall over Holden’s Stephanie Weaver-Groff (1:12), Boonville’s Aesa Fjell (3:06), El Dorado Springs’ Haylee Esparza (3:07) and Eldon’s Lucy Hollerman (2:35).
Freshman Brianna Bodine placed fourth at 100 pounds with wins by fall over Butler’s Addison Kuda (3:38) and Warsaw’s Lillianna Perez (4:56).
Bodine ultimately lost by fall to Lebanon’s Lacey Malonson in 2:33 during the third-place match.
Payton Busenhart won a 6-3 decision over Knob Noster’s Davie-Oplendo Woods before falling one win shy of the place matches at 110 pounds.
Violet Lavalle will enter districts later this week at 125 pounds at 21-17 after a losing 4-0 and 13-8 decisions in Buffalo.
Aaliyah Taylor drew a pair of byes in the consolation rounds at 155 pounds in Buffalo but saw her tournament end in the consolation third round after a loss by fall in 1:33 to Clinton’s Haidon Yates.
Macy Armstrong also drew a bye to the consolation second round at 190 pounds before seeing her tournament end with a loss by fall in :34 to Clinton’s Izzy Yates.
Prior to their trip to Buffalo, Owensville’s Dutchgirls competed in a tri-meet against Fatima’s Lady Comets and South Callaway’s Lady Bulldogs.
Defeating South Callaway 48-16, Owensville got wins by forfeit from Dare, Taylor, Lexis Manning (170), Armstrong, Emily Tune (235) and Bodine.
OHS also got contested wins from Busenhart and Lavalle both by fall.
Falling 37-36 to Fatima, Owensville got wins from Bodine, Lavalle and Manning by fall.
Earning wins by forfeit for the orange and black were Busenhart, Dare and Tune.
Dutchmen at Buffalo
Tying for 10th place with Boonville scoring 60 team points, Dustin’s Dutchmen were led by senior Steven Buddemeyer who placed second at 138 points with wins by fall over El Dorado Springs’ Kellen Edwards (1:09), Osage’s Drake Moore (1:34) and Marshfield’s Johnathan McGlynn (1:21),
Reaching the championship match, Buddemeyer settled for second place after losing a 9-5 decision to Reeds Spring’s Kadyn Allerton.
Cayson Faulkner won his second-round consolation match by fall over Diamond’s Johnathan Aguilar in 4:15 before being eliminated in the third round of consolation-bracket wrestling.
Diego Lansford drew a bye to the second round of the consolation bracket at 132 pounds before losing that match by fall in 1:24 to Warsaw’s Isaac Daughenbaugh.
Bo Buddemeyer posted three wins by fall at 144 pounds over Camdenton’s Grant Lapine (3:06), Reeds Spring’s Ronnie Jo Clouse (2:17) and Cole Camp’s Makiah Murguia (1:21).
Bo wound up one win shy of a place match losing his consolation semifinal match by fall to Warsaw’s Johrdan Decker in 1:24.
Liam Rasmussen also made it to the consolation semifinals before losing by fall in 3:00 to Hollister’s Cole Escobar.
Earlier in the tournament he earned a win by disqualification over Buffalo’s Dylan Gonzalez and a win by fall in :32 over Lathrop’s JD Summers.
Peyton Pohlmann won his consolation second-round match by fall in 1:50 over Diamond’s Cayle Addington before being eliminated in the third round of the consolation bracket.
Zach Barch pinned Diamond’s Cross Young in 3:05 during first-round consolation action before his tournament ended in the second round of consolation wrestling 165 pounds.
Will Coppedge drew a bye to the quarterfinals at 175 pounds before losing his next two matches and being eliminated from the tournament.
Cael Walker claimed a win by fall over Nevada’s Dominic Zermeno in :39 before being eliminated in the second round of consolation wrestling.
Logan Kiesling posted a win by fall over Diamond’s Brayden Wright in :36 before being eliminated by Camdenton’s Jayden Hodge via a 14-2 major decision at 215 pounds.
Henry Loeb pinned Lathrop’s Wyatt Cohee in 5:10 during first-round action at 285 pounds before losing his next two matches eliminating him from the tournament.
Sweeping Fatima (54-24) and South Callaway (54-18) a road tri-meet in Westphalia at Fatima High School, Owensville got win by forfeit against the Comets from Lansford, Bo Buddemeyer, Pohlmann, Barch, Kiesling and Loeb.
Scoring wins by fall against Fatima for the orange and black were Steven Buddemeyer, Rasmussen and Walker.
Posting wins against South Callaway for Owensville were Faulkner, Lansford, the Buddemeyer brothers, Rasmussen, Barch, Walker, Kiesling and Loeb.
Connor Henderson and Cayden Mooney also posted win by fall for the Dutchmen in exhibition matches.
Dustin Howard’s Dutchmen wrestlers will have two weeks off to rest and work on moves before their MSHSAA Class 2, District 3 Wrestling Tournament at Buffalo High School scheduled for Friday, Feb. 21 and Saturday, Feb. 22.
