OMS’ 8th Grade Dutchgirls place fourth on home court

Falling in three sets at Bourbon last Monday by scores of 25-20, 17-25 and 15-9, Jamie Ridenhour’s Owensville Middle School (OMS) eighth-grade Dutchgirl volleyball team looked to bounce back over the weekend on their future home court Saturday during the annual OMS Dutchgirl 8th Grade Volleyball Tournament at Owensville High School.

Able to advance to bracket play with sweeps of St. James and Sullivan after splits with Washington and New Haven, Owensville faced off against St. Clair’s Lady Bulldogs in the semifinals of bracket play.

Falling in two sets 25-19 and 25-17, the orange and black were relegated to the third-place match against Union’s Lady Wildcats.

Taking the first set 25-22, Owensville had a leg up in looking to keep a piece of hardware in town.

Dropping game two 25-14, the match went to a deciding third set with Union coming out on top 22-25, 25-14 and 15-10.

Complete statistics were not available from the third-place match at press time.

In semifinal action against St. Clair, Ella Homeyer had three aces in game one followed by two aces from Jorja Johnston.

Allison Evans and Zaylie Gromer both also added an ace for the Dutchgirls.

Game two saw Jewel Draheim lead the orange and black with two kills against St. Clair in addition to an ace apiece from Jordyn Crosby, Johnston and Gromer.

Sweeping Sullivan 25-23 and 25-20 in their final match of pool play, Crosby had five service points in game one while Gromer served three aces in a row.

Adelyn McDonald, Zoie Barnes, Crosby and Evans each had a kill for the Dutchgirls in the first set against Sullivan.

Game two saw Crosby record a pair of aces for the final two points of the set while Gromer served the first three points for the orange and black.

Also posting a sweep of St. James by scores of 25-18 and 25-12, Kendra Sullinger served 12 points in a row with four aces helping OMS dominate game one.

Evans also recorded four kills for the Dutchgirls in game one against St. James.

Crosby had a kill and three service points to close out game one.

Game two saw Gromer and Homeyer serve four points in a row before Crosby served the final three points of the match.

Splitting their pool match with Washington, Owensville dropped game one 25-21 in spite of two kills from Barnes before taking game two 25-13 behind seven Homeyer service points and two kills from Crosby.

Opening pool play against New Haven, the Dutchgirls dropped game one 25-23 before  Gromer rescued the Dutchgirl in game two with eight consecutive service points after trailing 22-17.

Gromer’s service run helped Owensville take game two 25-22 giving them a one-point advantage over the Lady Shamrocks.

OMS hosted New Haven Monday night and traveled to Union last night (Tuesday) to face Union before they host St. Clair tomorrow (Thursday) and St. James on Friday in the annual daytime match between the two schools.
