Ending the month of January and their respective seasons, Owensville Middle School (OMS) Dutchmen basketball teams coached by Jarett Payne and Shane Hunt looked to capture hardware from tournament action in Sullivan and St. Clair respectively.
Payne’s seventh-grade Dutchmen captured consolation hardware from Eagle country while Hunt’s eighth-grade Dutchmen defeated St. James for the third time this season to claim third place from St. Clair’s tournament.
In Sullivan, Payne’s Dutchmen opened their tournament week last Wednesday with a 49-31 loss to St. Clair.
Going into halftime tied at 18-18, Owensville entered the third quarter down 34-29 before being unable to overcome a two-point fourth quarter.
Brock Schneider led the Dutchmen with 18 points followed by six markers from Barrett Knight, four points from Logan Meyer and three points from Atticus Budnik all in the second quarter.
Consolation semifinal action against Union saw the orange and black play virtually from behind the majority of the game before outscoring the Wildcats 12-7 in the final six minutes of their 37-35 victory.
Meyer led the seventh-grade Dutchmen scoring seven of his team-high 11 points in the fourth quarter.
Knight followed with eight points netting seven of those in the second quarter.
Schneider was close behind with six points.
Budnik (4) and Nathan Dobbs (2) rounded out the Dutchmen scoring against Union.
Facing the host Sullivan Eagles with consolation hardware on the line last Friday night, Owensville turned a 24-19 halftime lead into a 50-29 victory behind 20 points from Grayson Kelley with 13 of those coming in the first half.
Budnik hit a trifecta of 3-point shots giving him nine points for the game while Matthew Allen scored six of his eight points in the fourth quarter.
Knight and Schneider each added six points to cap the Dutchmen scoring against Sullivan.
8th grade Dutchmen at St. Clair
Dispatching Sullivan 45-33 in the St. Clair Tournament opener last Wednesday night, Hunt’s Dutchmen looked to avenge a loss to Hermann’s Bearcats from two weeks ago.
Falling 43-28 to Hermann, Owensville found themselves in the third-place game last Friday night against St. James’ Tigers facing them for the third time this season.
Going for a third win on the season, Owensville nursed an 11-9 lead after one quarter before outscoring St. James 33-11 over the next two quarters helping them to a 49-36 victory.
Ending their season at 11-5, Will Brune led the Dutchmen against the Tigers with 15 points all on five made 3-pointers.
Trace Lange also reached double figures for Owensville scoring seven of his 12 points in the third quarter.
Ricky Ringeisen hit for six of his eight points in the second half while Brayden Oldfather added six points.
Ivan Phillips and Ryder Hane each added three points for Owensville while Kison Curtman and Jace Duerr each hit free throws good for one point.
In championship semifinal action against Hermann last Thursday night, Owensville led 8-6 after one quarter before trailing 22-16 at halftime.
Unable to overcome a five-point third quarter, Owensville was sent to the third-place game following a 43-28 loss to the Bearcats.
Lange led the Dutchmen with seven points followed closely with six points from Phillips on a pair of 3-pointers.
Oldfather also recorded six points to go along with four markers from Ringeisen.
Brune nailed a first-quarter 3-pointer for three points while Liam Knight capped the Owensville scoring against Hermann with two points on a fourth-quarter basket.
Will Schutt led Hermann with 21 points who was followed in double figures by Miles Eikermann with 20 points.
First-round action last Wednesday against Sullivan saw the Dutchmen lead the Eagles 11-7 after one quarter before a 17-5 second-quarter run helped the orange and black stay on the winner’s side of the bracket.
Oldfather showed the way for Owensville scoring a game-high 22 points while nearly joined in double figures by Brune with nine points on a trio of first-half 3-pointers.
Lange added seven points to go along with four markers from Ringeisen and two points from Roman Crowe on a fourth-quarter bucket.
