Peggy Lou Emde, 89, Owensville, passed away Friday, April 22, 2022, at her residence.

She was born on Nov. 29, 1932, a daughter of Alfred and Elizabeth (nee Shackelford) Carter in Scott, Okla.

She was united in marriage to Gordon L. Emde, April 21, 1951, in Yuma, Ariz.

Although she was born in Oklahoma, her family migrated to California in 1940. She shared many memories of World War II and her family’s involvement in the war effort. In her high school and young adult years, she sang with the San Francisco Community Choir and with the chorus at the San Francisco Opera House.

Peggy was a faithful member at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, a life member of the VFW Post 6133 Auxiliary, served on the Helping Hands Outreach board and Operation Christmas board for a number of years, worked with the local CROP Walk, and was a facilitator for the Alzheimer’s Support Group. She sang in the St. Peter’s UCC Church choir and was a co-director of their handbell choir. Additionally, she taught and directed Owensville High School seniors the art of playing handbells for their senior Baccalaureate service. Peggy was also active in the Owensville Area Relay for Life, serving on multiple committees. This mission was very close to her family’s hearts, losing many family members and friends to cancer. She also served as the treasurer for the City of Owensville and secretary for the 911 Board and received honors as the Meramec Regional Planning Commission’s (MRCP) Outstanding Volunteer of the Year in 2004.

She was preceded in death by parents Alfred and Elizabeth; husband Gordon; nine brothers and two sisters; and grandchild Jacob, whose memory was always in her heart.

She is survived by six children Gordon Emde and wife Tammi of Rosebud, Cheryl Schlottach and husband Kenneth, Janet Diestelkamp and husband James, Barbara Feagan and husband Michael all of Owensville, Charles Emde and wife Cheri of Joplin, and Susan Moniz and husband Alan of Modesto, Calif.; and 19 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Wednesday (today), April 27, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, Owensville, with Rev. Stephanie DeLong officiating. Entombment will be in Gottenstroeter Mausoleum, Owensville.
