In early December, this column’s underlying theme was the gifts from President Donald Trump that many on the left ignore.
The gifts listed were: lower taxes, reduced waste with the Department of Government Efficiency, lower prices at the gas pump, reduction in food prices, drop in violent crime, almost the elimination of illegal immigration, and six peace deals signed around the world.
Since then, Trump has given Americans more gifts, gifts the progressive left doesn’t want you to know about.
The biggest gift from number 47 is the reduction in inflation. In January, the inflation rate dropped to 2.4 percent in stark contrast to a high of 9 percent that was reached under President Joe Biden.
There is also great news in the January jobs report. The labor force grew by almost 400,000, unemployment was down to 4.3 percent, average hourly earnings grew 5 percent annualized — six times inflation according to Truflation’s current numbers — and hours worked rose, predicting future hiring.
A great gift for young adults with children is the Trump Account for Kids. These are IRA-style savings accounts for children with the government contributing $1,000 for eligible newborns.
Earlier this month, Trump announced TrumpRx.gov. This is a website that offers lifesaving pharmaceuticals at drastically reduced prices that are not covered by most health insurance plans — even Obamacare. Trump made deals giving us “most favored nation” pricing.
For example, Cetrotide, a fertility drug, went from $316 to $22.50. Airsupra, an asthma inhaler, went from $504 to $201. Duavee, for hot flashes and osteoporosis, went from $202 to $30. These are huge savings.
Also in February, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) eliminated the “2009 Obama EPA Endangerment Finding,” resulting in the largest single deregulation action in history. This will result in potential savings of $2,400 on the cost of a new car or truck.
All these gifts are there to see for anyone without Trump Derangement Syndrome.
Let’s contrast this good news from Trump with examples of how Democrats govern.
Two months into his term, New York’s communist mayor, Zohran Mamdani, is looking at a potential 9.5 percent raise in property taxes to help cover a budget deficit. This comes at a time when he has promised to make housing more affordable by freezing rent.
It doesn’t take an economics major to realize this is a disaster in the making.
Next, let’s take a look at the state of Virginia. Democrats, from the governor to state representatives, ran on affordability. After the last election cycle, they took control of everything in that state.
Below are a few of the bills they’ve introduced since coming into power:
• New 4.3 percent sales tax on Uber Eats, Amazon and other deliveries
• Creation of two new higher tax brackets of 8 and 10 percent on anyone making over $600,000.
• A new 10 percent tax bracket for anyone making over $1 million
• A 3.8 percent investment tax on top of state income taxes
• Increase in the state hotel tax
• New personal property tax on landscaping equipment
• $500 sales tax on firearm suppressors
• An 11 percent sales tax on all firearms and ammunition
Are you noticing a pattern here? These bills won’t make anything more affordable. Remember this in the fall when Missouri Democrats campaign on affordability. Democrats never propose to cut spending. Their sole remedy for budget shortfalls is tax increases.
Here are a few more of their outrageous proposals.
• Ban on gas powered leaf blowers
• Guarantee illegal aliens free education
• Allow people to cast their votes electronically through the internet
• Making it illegal to hand-count ballots
• Lower the criminal penalties for robbery
Virginia elected officials also want to amend the state constitution to grant felons voting rights.
This is a perfect comparison of the difference between the conservative right and the progressive left. Trump is making things more affordable. The left wants to raise taxes.
