A vehicle versus power pole situation created a power outage that affected about half the town last Saturday. Ameren notified customers of the outage at 9:20 a.m. and power was restored at 4:15 p.m.
Gerald Police Chief Jim Helton says his department was notified that a truck hauling a bucket truck or crane had pulled down power lines in Union, but had left the scene. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office asked Gerald police to stop the truck and its unnamed driver as it headed toward town.
Helton says he attempted to stop the truck along the straight stretch of U.S. Highway 50 east of town, but the driver failed to respond.
The driver continued towards town, eventually turning onto Canaan Road where his load again struck a power pole and pulled live wires down onto Canaan Road.
The Gerald-Rosebud Fire Department responded for traffic control and both lanes of the highway were shut down for a short while.
The accident was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol but has not issued a report on the incident.
