Gasconade County R-2 asst. super shares grant funding

Gasconade County R-2 Assistant Superintendent Jesse Janssen told the Board of Education on Aug. 17 that he and Superintendent Dr. Staci Johnson applied for the COPS grant to help purchase district security items.

“We just applied for one grant thus far, and that was the COPS grant,” he said. “We, Dr. Johnson and I, worked diligently to get things swapped over and switched over with the right permissions and everything to be able to get some (grants).”

Johnson said the federal government system is not always easy to work with.

“If we do get it, we could get up to $375,000 towards intercom systems and camera licensing and some other things like that,” Janssen said. “So we’re excited.”

According to Johnson’s notes in her board report, the COPS grant application was for $375,000, and would be allocated toward purchases such as district security camera licensing/expansion, district school building intercom systems, and an outdoor health and safety area at Owensville High School (OHS).

The district was also awarded the 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) grant for $399,479 for the third year in a row. The grant pays for ExcEL, a before-and-after-school program. The original grant was awarded in 2024 and the district is eligible for five years as long as it reapplies annually.

Johnson said she is waiting to hear back about the MOQPK grant that pays for preschool salaries and supplies and helps support the district’s early childhood education program. They are on a waiting list for the $300,000 grant. Johnson said she expects to know more in November if any funds will be awarded.

If all three grants are received, the lump sum is $1,074,479 to the district for the 2026-27 school year. The amount is down from the last two years, including $1,222,967 in 2025-26 and $1,144,898.60 in 2024-25 school years, but still above the $590,903 awarded in 2023-24 and $212,000 in 2022-23.

Johnson said she assisted Janssen with the application that falls under the assistant superintendent’s umbrella. She has been successful with the role in the past.
