Richard Hengstenberg


Richard August “Augie” Hengstenberg, 87, passed away Friday, May 10, 2019, at his home in Owensville. He was born Jan. 7, 1932, to Victor and Dorothy (Poppenhouse) Hengstenberg in St. Louis. 

 After a childhood in Georgia, Indiana, Baltimore and Detroit, Augie graduated from Owensville High School in 1949. He earned a degree in wildlife conservation and forestry from the University of Missouri, Columbia. He served in the U.S. Army stationed in Korea in 1955 and 1956. He was united in marriage to Bonnie Sue Aytes on Nov. 17, 1957, at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Owensville. 

 After returning from the service, he was an employee of Hengstenberg Hardware, becoming the owner in 1964 until the store burned in 1974. He then became a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 26 years. He was a member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, the VFW and the Moose Lodge. Augie was proud to be a 60-year member of the Owensville Lions Club and a life-long member of the Owensville Gun Club. He enjoyed target shooting, fishing, hunting (including 30 years of pheasant hunting in White Lake, SD) reading (especially at the local library) and spending time with his family. He and Bonnie enjoyed traveling in the United States and abroad with many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Dorothy Hengstenberg.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie, of the home; children Cindy (Don) Farris, Nancy (Kimmy) Landwehr. and Tom (Laura) Hengstenberg, all of Owensville; grandchildren Michael Landwehr of Owensville, Sarah (Marcus) Jones of Columbia, Mo., Jeffrey Landwehr of Owensville and Nicholas Farris and special friend Brittany Phillips of Rockhill, Mo.; great grandchildren Elijah Jones and Avari Jones; sister Donna Marsh and her husband Larry Noxon of Columbia, Mo.; generations of nieces and nephews, and many friends.

The funeral was held Tuesday, May 14, at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, with burial at Owensville Cemetery with full military honors.
