OWENSVILLE — An SUV hit the front of the Smoker Friendly store on Lincoln Ave. in Owensville at around 2:45 p.m. on Oct. 13. No one was injured during the accident.

Shawn Tyree was driving a Chevy Trailblazer borrowed from his friend, Edward Gehlert, on Tuesday afternoon when the vehicle’s brakes seemed to fail. Tyree heard a hissing noise when he pushed the brake pedal upon entering the parking lot. The brakes did still not engage when he pushed the pedal all the way down to the floor, Tyree told police at the scene.

Rather than stopping at the parking spot in front of the Smoker Friendly store, the car continued until it was stopped by the front of the building. There were not any customers inside of the store at the time of the accident, according to Assistant Manager Dawn Rednour, who was the only employee working.

A large cigar humidor, sitting directly on the other side of the wall from the impact, was knocked face down on the floor and cigars were scattered around it. Some cracking was visible on the building’s brick exterior as well as the interior drywall.

Both the building owner and the owner of the vehicle said they planned on filing insurance claims. The building owner said they plan on having someone come out as soon as possible to gauge the extent of the damage. The building also houses a State Farm Insurance office and a Domino’s Pizza.

Officer Jason Ohrenberger was the first to reach the scene, just two minutes after the department received the call. In a case like this, without any criminal element or need for an investigation, the officer’s role is to take down all the requisite information, repeat it back to the witnesses to ensure it is correct and then to file a report, Ohrenberger said.
