Students show love for first responders

Posted

Throughout the school year, Jennifer Lindemeyer, counselor at Gerald Elementary School, organizes community service projects for the student body.

In February, the month to celebrate love, Lindemeyer organized a treat drive to fill baskets for first responders.

Each family group helped fill a basket with goodies. Family groups were also initiated by Lindemeyer. They consist of one teacher and students of all grade levels. They meet regularly and the goal is to create a “family” where the older students mentor the younger ones at various times during the school year. Help may be given in the form of tying a shoe, watching out for each other on the playground or on the bus, or just giving a smile as they pass in the hall. These family groups have helped create bonds that travel across grade levels.

Besides the baskets, students also created their own personal notes and cards to present to the first responders.

All local departments sent a representative to the school last Wednesday morning to accept their basket of love.

Lindemeyer remarked that this project had turned into one of the students’ favorites. Their excitement was evident as the honorees took their places in the gymnasium where the students were waiting. The excitement increased when Deputy Davis with the Franklin County Sheriff’s office entered with Rollo one of two trained canines in that department.

Lindemeyer says upcoming community service projects include a collection of hygiene products in April and a clean-up in May.
