The sky is overcast: ‘Call off school’

Posted

To the Editor:

I have not been on social media since 2015, but reliable sources inform me there is no lack of opinion being voiced on the legitimacy of the school district canceling classes because of poor driving conditions and/or extremely cold temperatures. Some folks recognize its legitimacy while others complain that it is overkill that does little more than cause unnecessary inconvenience.

While I delight in making fun of school being closed, I must admit that I am firmly entrenched on the side of canceling classes when the decision-makers deem it appropriate. The decision-makers are just as firmly entrenched in a damed-if-you-do, damed-if-you-don’t position. I do not envy their position, but if I were found to be in it, I would error on the side of caution. EVERY time!

The chance of a child (or several) being harmed is not worth the risk. It never will be. Besides the fact that we’re talking about children’s welfare and the liability thereof, there’s also the fact that if classes were not canceled due to conditions, and one or more people ended up being harmed because of that decision, the people complaining the loudest would be the ones who argued that the decision to cancel classes was unnecessary overkill.

Sincerely,

Patrick J. Leslie
