Any other year when a winter storm is not approaching the area, Fort Zumwalt South (FZS) High School in St. Peters would host a girls wrestling tournament on a Friday night and then a boys tournament the following Saturday.
With Winter Storm Fern in the forecast, officials decided to hold both the boys and girls tournaments this past Friday night.
When the final matches concluded around midnight, three Owensville High School (OHS) wrestlers left Bulldog country winning their respective weight classes.
Brandon Howard’s Owensville Dutchgirls led the way with a fourth-place team finish scoring 85 points behind St. Charles West (202), Francis Howell (137.5) and FZS (103.5).
Freshman Brianna Bodine topped the 100-pound weight class with a win by fall over Winfield’s Haley Dubois in :24 before winning a 13-3 major decision over Pacific’s Madelyn Rush to advance to the championship match.
Pinning FZS’ Carly Williams in 1:56, Bodine became the first of Owensville three FZS Tournament champions.
Joining Bodine as a FZS Tournament champion was Rylee Dare at 145 pounds.
She pinned her way to a tournament title with wins by fall over St. Charles West’s Emma Gardner (1:31), Pacific’s Sofia Krehmeyer (1:50) and Mehlville’s Bella Ordaz (:38).
Payton Busenhart collected a third-place medal at 110 pounds with a win by fall over Pacific’s Bentleigh Frisch in 1:28.
Busenhart also had wins by fall at FZS over St. Charles West’s Jayden Jessup (1:45) and Webster Grove’s Lilah Duvall (3:49).
Anieya Bergesch placed fifth at 120 pounds for the Dutchgirls winning her fifth-place match by fall in 2:33 over Hazelwood East’s Raelynn Baldwin.
Also defeating Baldwin during first-round action at 120 pounds, Bergesch also had a win by fall in the consolation rounds over Webster Groves’ Amelia Beatty in 2:23.
Violet Lavalle had a pair of byes during her FZS Tournament at 130 pounds before losing both of her contested matches by fall.
Maci Armstrong rounded out Owensville’s contingency of Dutchgirl wrestlers at FZS losing her consolation second-round match by fall after having a round-one bye.
Dustin Howard’s Owensville Dutchmen placed sixth as a team with 106.5 points behind FZS (230.5), Pattonville (161), Troy Buchanan (148), Timberland (125) and Holt (120.5).
Steven Buddemeyer showed the way for the Dutchmen with a first-place finish at 138 pounds pinning his way to a FZS title.
Winning all four of his matches by fall, Buddemeyer pinned Orchard Farm’s Mason Stone (1:15), FZS’ Liam Brown (1:22), FZS’ Lucas Titus (1:58) and Charleston’s Trotter Titus (:16).
Mason Turner left St. Peters with silver following his second-place finish at 144 pounds.
Defeating Hazelwood East’s Javon Jordan by a 14-0 major decision in the first round, Turner then earned a bye to the semifinals where he won by a 15-0 technical fall over Charleston’s Cameron Johnson before being pinned in :31 by FZS’ Colin Weiss in the championship match.
Next for the Dutchmen at FZS was Liam Rasmussen who placed third at 150 pounds following a win by fall over Holt’s Brody Griffin in :25.
Rasmussen also posted wins by fall throughout the tournament over Pattonville’s John Ignacio and FZS’ Eli Nielsen in 2:58.
Keagon Schatz placed fourth at 157 pounds after losing the third-place match by fall to Parkway North’s Josiah Conley in 1:16.
Prior to the third-place match, Schatz won a 10-0 major decision over FZS’ Connor Deak in addition to a win by fall over Pattonville’s Blake Meriweather in :37.
One of three Dutchmen wrestlers who placed sixth, Grayson Lairmore took sixth at 120 pounds after losing the fifth-place match by fall to FZS’ Hay Anul in 1:02.
Lairmore earned a win by fall over Orchard Farm’s Ben Shields in 1:16 before fighting his way back through the consolation side of the bracket and back to the fifth-place match.
Zach Barch also won his way back through consolation land and into a sixth-place finish at 165 pounds after a loss by fall in :45 to Pattonville’s Michael Saccketti in the fifth-place match.
Barch pinned Fort Zumwalt East’s (FZE) Ezekiel Watshimanga in 1:37 and won an 11-9 decision over Gateway’s Kair James to reach the fifth-place match.
Logan Kiesling also had to win a pair of matches to go for fifth place at 215 pounds before losing by fall to Pattonville’s Raymoen Goodrich in :48 to settle for sixth place.
Kiesling pinned Hazelwood East’s Chris Jones in 1:04 before winning a 6-2 decision over FZE’s Aiden Floyd.
Diego Lansford lost his first-round but was not able to turn a first-round bye in the consolation bracket into a place match as he was eliminated in the second round after a loss by fall.
Owensville had their scheduled tri-meet with St. James and Central Parks Hills canceled due to inclement weather and a new dual was being worked on at press time to serve as a substitute for what would’ve been senior night.
