To the Editor of the Maries County Advocate:
As a Maries County taxpayer, I am writing to express my frustration with the striking differences in the condition of our county gravel roads.
Some roads appear smooth and consistently well maintained, while others, including the road I live on, are in terrible condition and, at times, nearly impassable. It is difficult to accept this disparity when residents throughout the county contribute their tax dollars and depend on these roads every day.
I understand that gravel roads require ongoing maintenance and that weather, traffic, drainage and limited funding create challenges. However, those challenges do not eliminate the county’s responsibility to provide consistent, effective maintenance and explain why some roads receive noticeably better results than others.
The conditions raise reasonable questions about grading practices, operator training, supervision, and how maintenance priorities are established. Whether the problem involves inadequate resources, inconsistent workmanship, or insufficient attention, taxpayers deserve an explanation and a meaningful plan for improvement.
Residents should not have to repeatedly complain simply to receive basic road maintenance. We are asking for safe, reasonably maintained roads - not perfection. When some gravel roads demonstrate what proper maintenance can accomplish, residents on neglected roads have every reason to ask why the same standard is not being met in their area.
I urge the county commission and those responsible for road maintenance to inspect the roads receiving complaints, explain how work is prioritized, and provide a clear timetable for addressing serious problems. Accountability should include evaluating whether completed work actually improves conditions.
My frustration is not with the existence of gravel roads. It is with paying taxes while the road serving my home remains in unacceptable condition and other roads appear to receive effective, consistent care.
Every community in Maries County deserves fair consideration. Our address should not determine whether our concerns are taken seriously.
Sincerely,
Roy T. McAllister
Maries County Resident
