VanLeer’s Dutchmen end 17-year victory drought in Westphalia

Last Wednesday night, Cullen VanLeer’s Owensville Dutchmen basketball team paid a visit to Osage County looking for their first victory over Fatima’s Comets in Westphalia since the end of the second George W. Bush administration in 2008.

Carrying a slim 32-30 lead into the fourth quarter, Owensville hit three of their four attempts from the free-throw line during the final eight minutes helping them post a 39-36 road victory over the Comets.

Considering most of the Dutchmen basketball roster is juniors and below, most of this year’s squad was likely not even born when the Dutchmen last posted a victory in Westphalia back in 2008.

In just his third game back from an ankle injury, junior Chase Crosby led the orange and black with 18 points, seven rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocked shots.

Keigan Glaser added seven points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Chase Weirich was close behind with six points and two assists to go along with three points apiece out of Bryce Kramme and Brady Watson.

Watson also pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.

Wyatt Lewis scored his lone two points of the game in the fourth quarter helping the Dutchmen hold off the Comets.

Owensville dropped the junior-varsity contest 53-24.

Dutchmen at Washington

Opening the week last Monday on the road against Washington’s Blue Jays, VanLeer’s Dutchmen looked to avenge a loss to the blue and white from the seventh-place game of the Turkey Tournament at Borgia.

Down 38-34 entering the fourth quarter, Owensville could not overcome 18 fourth-quarter points by the Blue Jays before ending up on the wrong side of a 55-43 final score.

Crosby showed the way for the Dutchmen with 22 points and four rebounds while Glaser added eight points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Weirich and Watson each added six points while Lewis rounded out the Dutchmen scoring against Washington with a second-quarter free throw for one point.

Watson also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Nakai Scott led the Blue Jays with 15 points.

Owensville’s Dutchmen will close 2025 with a triple header tomorrow (Thursday) night on the road in Cole County against Russellville’s Indians.
