Looking for their first win in the month of February, Cullen VanLeer’s Owensville Dutchmen hosted New Haven’s Shamrocks last Friday night inside Owensville High School’s (OHS) main gymnasium.
Trailing 12-7 after one quarter and 19-16 at halftime, the Dutchmen outscored the Shamrocks 26-15 in the third quarter helping them to a 54-46 victory that snapped a four-game losing streak going back to their home loss against Salem at the end of January.
Brady Watson showed the way for the Dutchmen with a game-high 22 points while Chase Crosby also reached double figures with 12 points.
Adam Wilson nearly made it a trio of Dutchmen double-digit scorers scoring seven of his nine points in the second half while Keigan Glaser and Chase Weirich each chipped in five points.
Drew Chapman capped the Owensville scoring against New Haven with one point on a second-quarter free throw.
Owensville also posted a 39-29 victory in the junior-varsity contest.
Last Tuesday night in St. James, VanLeer’s Dutchmen took on the host Tigers in a match up of the top two teams in Four Rivers Conference (FRC) preseason voting.
Holding a 15-9 lead after one quarter, Owensville then found themselves trailing 24-23 at halftime.
Unable to overcome an 18-5 third-quarter run, the Dutchmen ended up on the wrong side of a 58-37 final score.
Crosby showed the way for Owensville with 16 points, three rebounds, two steals and an assist while Watson added eight points and four rebounds.
Glaser finished with seven points, two rebounds and two assists.
Chapman and Weirich both added three points apiece for the orange and black.
In a 52-13 loss by Owensville’s JV Dutchmen at St. James, Kylen Menz led OHS with five points followed closely by Bryce Kramme with a first-quarter 3-pointer for three points.
LB Sublett capped the JV Dutchmen scoring with two points.
Falling 49-30 in C team action at St. James, the Dutchmen were led by Ivan Phillips with seven points followed closely with six points from Tanner Mogensen.
Andrew Budnik added five points all in the second half while Hunter Downey also scored all four of his points in the second half.
Lucas Staton and Sublett both scored three points to go with two points on a second-quarter bucket from Ryder Wehmeyer.
Owensville will end their regular season in FRC road action Friday night at Union and on Tuesday, Feb. 24 as part of a varsity doubleheader at Sullivan.
