VanLeer’s Dutchmen tame Gateway Legacy’s Lions

Falling to Southern Boone (58-36) and Pacific (52-49) during pool play of the 37th Maries County Bank Owensville Varsity Boys Basketball Tournament earlier last week, Cullen VanLeer’s Owensville Dutchmen faced off against the Gateway Legacy Christian Academy (GLCA) Lions out of St. Louis.

Scoring the first 11 points of the game against the Lions, Owensville led 13-5 after one quarter before starting the second period on a 14-0 run helping them to a 27-10 halftime lead before going on to a 58-42 victory.

“It was great to end the week with a win after two tough games against Southern Boone and Pacific earlier in the week,” VanLeer said.

Chase Crosby led the way for Owensville against the Lions with 22 points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists.

Named to the All-Tournament Team as a second-team selection, junior Brady Watson finished with a double double of 12 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

Keigan Glaser and Drew Chapman each netted seven points.

Glaser added six rebounds and three assists while Chapman pulled down four rebounds and dished three assists.

Chase Weirich scored all five of his points in the second quarter while Bryce Kramme knocked down a third-quarter 3-pointer for his three markers.

Wyatt Lewis rounded out the Dutchmen scoring with two points, five rebounds and four assists.

Emri Hanci led the Lions with 18 points while Bruno Kraus added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Dutchmen vs. Pacific

Leading 17-12 after one quarter, Owensville moved their lead into double digits at 30-19 on a Glaser 3-pointer at the 4:04 mark of the second quarter.

Pacific then ended the half on an 8-2 trimming the Dutchmen halftime lead to five at 32-27.

Nursing a 3-point lead on a Chase Crosby basket with 4:16 remaining, Owensville saw their 49-46 lead disappear by being held scoreless the rest of the way during their 52-49 loss to the Indians.

Crosby scored a game-high 15 points while adding three assists and two steals to his point total.

Watson recorded his second double double of the tournament finishing with 14 points, 13 rebounds and three steals.

Chapman made it a trio of double-digit Dutchmen scorers racking up all 10 of his points in the first half against Pacific.

Glaser finished with six points on a pair of first-half 3-pointers while Weirich chipped in four points on two first-half buckets.

Gage Clark led three Pacific Indians in double figures with 12 points.

Spencer Bukowsky (11) and Logan Hoffman (10) also reached double digits in scoring for the Indians.

Dutchmen vs. Southern Boone

Opening their portion of the tournament last Tuesday against the defending champion Southern Boone Eagles, VanLeer’s Dutchmen led 14-12 after one quarter before Andy Jahnsen’s Eagles used a 22-3 second-quarter run helping them to a 34-20 halftime lead.

Able to get back within nine at 42-33 on a Glaser 3-pointer at the 1:42 mark of the third quarter, Owensville saw Southern Boone end the game on a 16-3 run.

Recording the first of his three double doubles in the tournament, Watson led the orange and black against Southern Boone with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Glaser finished with eight points followed by five third-quarter points from Crosby.

Rounding out the Dutchmen scoring against the Eagles with three points apiece were Kramme, Chapman and Weirich.

Named the Owensville Tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP), Eagle senior Chase Rackers led four Southern Boone players in double figures with 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Owensville will return to action this Friday night traveling south on Highway 19 into southern Crawford County to face Steelville’s Cardinals for their court warming beginning with JV action at 5 p.m.
