Warrenton is back

From 1969 all the way up to 2001, Owensville’s Dutchmen and Warrenton’s Warriors opened each others football seasons.

21 years later, the two squads will renew their series with the Dutchmen currently holding a 17-15-1 edge all time.

While owning two more wins than the Warriors currently, Owensville has lost the last four meetings against Warrenton from 1998-2001.

Owensville’s first win against Warrenton came during the Ron Briggs era of Dutchmen football back in 1969 by a score of 28-0 in Warren County.

The lone tie in the series came three years later in 1972 during Jack Blount’s first stint as Dutchmen head football coach with a 14-14 draw at Owensville.

Blount was also responsible for Owensville’s first win over the Warriors at home two years later by a score of 13-8 in 1974.

From 1975 to 1979, the Warriors won the next five games before Blount returned to help the Dutchmen dominate Warrenton throughout the 1980s.

Winning eight in a row from 1980-87, Blount orchestrated four shutouts of the Warriors in 1980 (35-0), 1981 (13-0), 1982 (45-0) and 1984 (34-0).

Aside from a 17-0 loss in 1988, Blount ended up finishing with a record of 10-3-1 against Warrenton.

Gene Hay won his lone showdown with the Warriors back in 1989 with a 14-7 win in overtime.

To date, that is the only time in 33 meetings between Warrenton and Owensville that a game has been decided in overtime.

During Larry Mueller’s three seasons as sideline boss of the football Dutchmen, OHS went 2-1 against Warrenton with a 17-6 loss in 1990 followed by victories in 1991 (19-0) and 1992 (8-0).

Taking charge in 1993, Paul Day went 3-2 against the Warriors while he was head coach of the football Dutchmen.

Day scored victories in 1994 (17-14), 1996 (20-9) and 1997 (45-14).

Now back in his native Lamar, former Dutchmen head football coach Kevin Baldwin went 0-4 against Warrenton with his closest setback coming in 1999 with a 21-18 loss.

Shortly after the 2001 season, Warrenton joined the Gateway Athletic Conference (GAC) forcing them to drop OHS.

Over two decades later, Owensville will look to not only snap a four-game losing streak against the Warriors, but also bounce back from a heartbreaking 27-26 loss last Friday night against Eldon on the last play of the game.

Looking at the match up in 2022, Owensville is currently 1-1 with a 50-0 win over Cuba and a 27-26 loss to Eldon.

Warrenton will come in at 0-2 with losses in week one to Fort Zumwalt North 41-12 and in week two to Washington 41-0.
