Falling 11-1 last Wednesday in rescheduled high school baseball action at OHS Field against St. Francis Borgia’s Knights, Steven Kemp’s Owensville Dutchmen looked to get back in the win column with two more home games last week on Thursday against Capital City’s Cavaliers and Friday against New Haven’s Shamrocks on senior night.
One day after sophomore Tucker Sassmann tossed a two-hit shutout helping Owensville to a 1-0 victory over Capital City High School out of Jefferson City, Dutchmen senior pitcher Chase Weirich looked to toss one of his own in Four Rivers Conference (FRC) baseball action against New Haven.
Limiting the Shamrocks to three hits over seven innings, Weirich also helped his cause at the plate with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning of Owensville’s 5-0 senior-night victory over New Haven.
Owensville broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning when Westin Kramme walked and scored on a Henry Womack RBI single giving the orange and black an early 1-0 lead.
After Weirich pitched around a one-out single in the top of the third inning, Owensville added to their lead in the bottom half of the third when Leyton Homeyer reached on an error and scored on a Tucker Sassmann RBI double.
Sassmann later scored on a Westin Kramme RBI single bumping the Owensville lead to 3-0 after three innings.
Following a scoreless fourth inning, Chris Allen singled with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning setting the table for Weirich’s senior-night home run giving the Dutchmen their final margin of victory.
Pitching a complete-game shutout for the win on senior night, Weirich allowed just three hits and a walk to go with 14 strikeouts.
Among those 14 strikeouts was number 200 for his career.
Allen is also approaching a career milestone needing just five hits to reach 100 for his outstanding Dutchmen baseball career.
Dutchmen vs. Capital City
Welcoming Capital City’s Cavaliers out of Jefferson City to Owensville High School’s OHS Field last Thursday night, Kemp’s Dutchmen found themselves in a pitcher’s dual with no score until the bottom of the fourth inning.
Allen led the frame off with a single before courtesy runner Liam Rasmussen came on to run the bases.
Rasmussen advanced to second base on a Sassmann single before scoring on a two-out RBI single off the bat of George Vandegriffe for the lone run of the game during Owensville’s 1-0 victory.
Allowing just two Cavalier hits last Thursday night, Sassmann earned the complete-game victory while allowing just one walk in addition to striking out 10 batters.
Showing the way for the Dutchmen offense was Allen with two hits to go along with one each from Gabe Medlock, Homeyer, Sassmann and Vandegriffe.
Weirich also drew two walks in three plate appearances against Capital City.
Unable to overcome a nine-run top of the fifth inning last Wednesday against St. Francis Borgia, Owensville dropped an 11-1 decision in six innings against their opponents from Washington.
Owensville scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the second inning when Homeyer singled and scored on a Bryce Kramme RBI single.
Medlock took the loss allowing nine runs (four earned) on five hits and three walks pitching two and a third innings.
Hosting Linn Monday night, Owensville will hit the road tomorrow (Thursday) to face Eugene before hosting Dixon on Friday with a 4:30 p.m., first pitch.
