You don’t get to choose your own facts

To the Editor:

We hope that you give us a chance to respond to some points in Mr. Hoernschemeyer’s letter to the editor which referenced a previous letter sent by us.

There are facts to disprove some of his assertions. While we respect differences of opinions, you don’t get to choose your own facts. Facts are facts.

First of all a quick fact check shows that Trump’s quote from 2011 was about Obama…not George HW Bush.  Here are a couple of quotes from an article from Business Insider, Jan 2020.  “In 2011 and 2012, Donald Trump repeatedly accused President Barack Obama of seeking war with Iran to help win the 2012 presidential election.”

“In order to get elected, @BarackObama will start a war with Iran,” Trump tweeted in 2011, years before he began his own presidential campaign.”

There are other “facts” cited by Mr.Hoernschemeyer with which we have issue. We urge everyone to do some fact-checking before they say things are facts… and to use several sources.

Read about the money sent to Iran, the international Iran Nuclear Deal, and what Joe Biden actually did in Ukraine from several sources.  None of that seems nefarious.

None of us is perfect. But facts and opinions need to be stated as such.

We do agree with a couple of the statements made by the writer. “Running for public office does not shield anyone from investigation and prosecution for misdeeds in or out of office.”

We wonder why Trump did not use the vast powers of his justice department for this “investigation” instead of using Giuliani and doing it secretly. We also agree, “Hate is a self-destroying thing.”

Here in Gasconade County, we hope we can base our opinions on facts and reach across what divides us to find some common ground. We long for a President and leaders who will do that.
