Last week, 13 was a frequently occurring number for yours truly.

From last Monday up until Saturday, I had the pleasure of covering 13 basketball games at gyms in Eugene, Chamois, Hermann, Chesterfield (Marquette High School), Rolla, Owensville and Montgomery City (Montgomery County High School).

Beginning with the Eugene Girls Basketball Tournament in Cole County, Warden Publishing had three teams competing which included Belle’s Lady Tigers, Vienna’s Lady Eagles and Linn’s Lady Wildcats.

Tuesday took me into Osage County for a boys basketball showdown between Chamois’ Pirates and Vienna’s Eagles before moving east on Highway 100 back to Hermann for the Hermann JV Girls Basketball Tournament and first-round action between the host Lady Bearcats and Fulton JV Lady Hornets.

Mid-week basketball last Wednesday began with consolation semifinal action at the Union 8th Grade Boys Basketball Tournament featuring Hermann’s Bearcats taking on Sullivan’s Eagles and Union Middle School.

Continuing east towards St. Louis, John VanLeer’s Owensville Dutchgirls were in the Marquette Girls Basketball Tournament in semifinal action against Fort Zumwalt West’s Lady Jaguars.

After three straight nights of basketball, it was time for some wrestling last Thursday at Rolla High School and a tri-meet between the host Bulldogs, Washington and Owensville.

This marked the season opener for Dustin Howard’s Dutchmen and only action until a Thursday, Dec. 14 tri-meet at Sullivan.

Friday hoops action kept me in town for a boys tripleheader at Owensville High School between the host Dutchmen and visiting Salem Tigers.

Saturday travels took me along Highway 19 for the third-place game at the Hermann JV Girls Tournament in addition to a pair of hardware games to conclude the Montgomery Country Tournament featuring Hermann’s Bearcats and their Lady Bearcat counterparts.

Hermann’s Lady Bearcats were also going for their record 13th Montgomery County Girls Basketball Tournament title but settled for second place following a 73-49 loss to the host Lady Wildcats.

Andy Emmon’s Lady Bearcats will have to wait for title number 13 next year in Montgomery County.
