BLAND — The Bland Board of Aldermen approved a request for additional law enforcement personnel during the community’s upcoming Fourth of July celebration.
Officials reminded residents that Bland’s annual Fourth of July celebration will be held June 27 at the city park as part of the community’s observance of America’s 250th anniversary.
During the public safety report, Police Chief Charles (Chuck) Holtz said the event is expected to attract a larger crowd than last year’s celebration. Plans include food sales featuring fried fish, hamburgers, hot dogs and funnel cakes, with proceeds benefiting Shop With a Hero.
To help manage the larger crowd, Holtz requested approval to hire two to three additional off-duty law enforcement officers or correctional officers to assist with security and traffic control during the event.
“Last year we had some issues with traffic control. We had someone brandish a firearm, so I like to bring on a couple extra guys,” Holtz said.
The board approved the request by a 4-0 vote.
Holtz also reported that the Bland Police Department responded to 34 calls for service during May, conducted 56 traffic stops and made two arrests. The department issued 14 warning letters and 11 citations during the month, with enforcement efforts focused primarily on unlicensed vehicles, trash and tall grass violations.
