This week, readers, we’re learning all about the FIRST Tech Challenge Missouri Championship since one of the two robotics teams from Owensville High School has qualified for that competition for the first time in school history.

An inventor named Dean Kamen fouded FIRST in 1989 to inspire an appreciation of science and technology in young people. Kamen’s FIRST firm — For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology — is based in Manchester, N.H., and “designs accessible, innovative programs to build self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills while motivating young people to pursue opportunities in science, technology, and engineering,” according to a press release they issued announcing Owensville High School’s accomplishment this past weekend at Fox High School.

The OHS squad won what’s called a “finalist alliance” and a “first pick award” meaning the team will be advancing to the FIRST Tech Challenge Missouri Championship scheduled Saturday, March 9, on the campus of the University of MissouriScience and Technology (MS&T) in Rolla.

“Team 12427 — Bot of Steel — from Owensville High School was proud to represent Owensville at the Missouri East Conference Qualifier,” according to the release. “The team travelled to Fox High school in Arnold, Mo., on Feb. 9, to compete for an advancement to the Missouri Championship. Thirty-six teams from across the region were vying for high scores on the field and awards.

“Team 12427 — Bot of Steel — had an amazing day running their robot and meeting with judges. The team is proud to announce that they won the Finalist Alliance — 1st Pick Award. This recognition means they made it to the semi-finals for the tournament. The 48 teams will be competing for nine advancement slots to the FIRST Championship Houston. The team appreciates all the support they have received from school, parents and the Arconic Foundation.”
