County sales taxes continue strong march into new year

HERMANN — Gasconade County’s various sales taxes continued their strong performance this month, especially the Use Tax, which produced the second-largest monthly reimbursement since it was first received in late 2021.

County Treasurer Mike Faegan called the taxes’ production “really good news. February was a banner month,” he told the County Commission Thursday at its weekly session.

The county’s February reimbursement check from the Missouri Department of Revenue for the General Revenue Fund was $104,583, more than $1,000 larger than the January amount. The $208,035 received in the first two month is $6,800 more than was received in the same period last year.

The Use Tax, the sales tax that’s applied to mainly online purchases from out-of-state retailers, produced a February check of $59,902 — the second-largest monthly reimbursement only to the $93,742 received in August of last year. After the first two months, the Use Tax has produced one-fifth the $535,723 that was received in 2023. The January and February amounts total $106,828.

Meanwhile, the five cities that share a portion of the county’s half-cent Law Enforcement Sales Tax (LEST) had another good month. While down by about $300 from January’s amount of $73,019, the February LEST check is for $72,747 for a two-month total of $145,766 going to the county and the cities of Owensville, Hermann, Bland, Rosebud and Gasconade receiving a share of $48,589.

Here are the amounts the municipalities received in February and their total amounts for January and February: Owensville, $11,154, $22,350; Hermann, $8,729, $17,492; Bland, $1,939, $3,887; Rosebud, $1,697, $3,401; Gasconade, $727, $1,457.

As for the 3-percent sales tax on the sale of marijuana, the county in February doubled the amount it received in January. This month’s check is for $7,395, compared to the January reimbursement of $3,122 for a two-month total of $10,517. That revenue was produced from sales from the county’s only marijuana retailer, which is located in Hermann.
