Kill two birds with one stone.
That was the goal Monday night for Tyler Ahring’s Owensville Dutchmen as they welcomed Sullivan’s Eagles to OHS Field in a baseball showdown with Four Rivers Conference (FRC) and MSHSAA Class 4, District 4 implications.
Thanks to a three-run first inning and a two-run second, it was mission accomplished for the Dutchmen behind sophomore Jordan Rabbitt shutting out the Eagles 5-0 on 88 pitches scattering six hits and a walk to go with three strikeouts.
Benefiting from three double plays throughout the game, Rabbitt was helped tremendously by the pitcher’s best friend.
Owensville’s three-run first inning began with a walk to Dominic Grigaitis and a Derek Brandt bunt single.
With Bryce Payne on the base paths courtesy running for Grigaitis, the Dutchmen junior scored when Gavin Loague reached on a fielder’s choice.
Eli Wilson then drove Brandt in on a RBI single before Loague scored on a Logan Evans RBI ground out.
During Owensville’s two-run second inning, Rabbitt helped his own cause with a one-out walk before scoring later in the inning.
Grigaitis singled before Payne scored OHS’ final run of the game on a RBI double off the bat of Loague.
This win quickly erased any memory of their 15-6 loss to Potosi last Friday night.
Owensville also won the JV game 7-2 over Sullivan with Garrett Crosby and Jaden Gerlemann each scoring two runs.
