East Central College to lead Four Rivers LPN program in 2026

East Central College will assume leadership of the Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) program now offered through the School District of Washington beginning in August 2026.

The program will be under ECC’s accredited Health Sciences division, where it will be aligned with the College’s curriculum and support systems for nursing and allied health students.

“This program has long served the community by preparing practical nurses who are ready to step into essential roles across the region,” said Dr. Jon Bauer, president of East Central College. “Bringing it under ECC’s health sciences umbrella preserves its mission and gives students access to the services and resources provided by ECC. It is a step that supports our students, our healthcare partners, and the future of the nursing workforce. The collaboration with the school district on this transition is a clear example of how we work together to serve the community.”

The program will remain rooted in its long-standing mission as it enters its next chapter.

“Our goal is to prepare graduates with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to provide competent, entry-level practical nursing care in a variety of healthcare settings,” said Dr. Nancy Mitchell, dean of Health Sciences.

She added that the program will continue to be housed at the Four Rivers Career Center. The College and the School District of Washington have a two-year lease agreement that allows ECC to use the space as the program transitions.

Mitchell noted that the transition to ECC will provide several important benefits for students.

“Students will have access to additional campus resources, including tutoring, libraries, student services, and simulation labs,” she said. “Our faculty will provide enhanced academic and clinical support, and students will have clearer pathways to advanced nursing programs, including ADN bridge options.”

More students will also be able to receive financial aid.

“This is an important change for those who may not have previously had access to federal or state aid,” Mitchell added. “It opens the door for more students to enter the program and move directly into the workforce.”
