A Morrison couple died Saturday evening when the husband failed to stop at the junction of Route ZZ and Highway 19 in Drake, pulling into the path of a southbound pickup truck.

Gary L. Rost, 59, and Julia A. Rost, 61, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash reported at 5:45 p.m. Sept. 9. He had been driving the 2006 Dodge Dakota west on Route ZZ approaching Highway 19 when he failed to stop. Shawn T. Browning, 33, of Hermann, was driving a 2020 Dodge Ram 1500 south on 19, approaching U.S. 50, when the Rost vehicle traveled into the intersection without stopping. The Rost vehicle struck Browning’s truck, overturned onto its top, and came to rest in the southbound lane of 19.

Browning’s truck went off the right side of the road after being struck and came to rest in the ditch facing south.

Gasconade County Coroner Jeff Arnold. who also serves as fire chief for the Owensville Fire Department, pronounced the Rosts dead at 6:48 p.m.; both had suffered trauma to the head. “Their injuries were consistent with a motor vehicle crash. Trauma to the head,” said Arnold.

Julia Rost was partially ejected from the vehicle, according to Arnold.

No autopsies were performed. Arnold said blood samples were taken from the deceased at the scene.

Two passengers in the Browning vehicle suffered moderate injuries, according to the report by Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper Brian R. Lange. Emalee O. Knapp, 19, of Hermann, and an unidentified 8-year-old juvenile male were both transported by ambulance to Mercy Washington for treatment. The MSHP does not identify juveniles injured in motor vehicle crashes by policy.

Browning and his passengers were all wearing seat belts, according to the report. The Rosts were not. Their bodies were transported to Toedtmann-Grosse Funeral Home in Hermann.
