Every baseball fan’s dream is to leave the ball park with a foul ball.

Sometimes foul balls find glass in automobiles and a souvenir is obtained that way.

Over the weekend for yours truly, I came out of Saturday’s Prospect League baseball game between the Cape Girardeau Catfish and Quincy Gems to a pile of shattered glass from my back window after a foul ball smashed through it after leaving Quincy University (QU) Stadium in Quincy, Ill.

Trying initially to drive home with what was left of the glass, pieces started breaking off and the decision was made to find the closest car wash that had a vacuum cleaner.

About an hour and $20 later, what was left of the shattered glass was vacuumed out turning my 2016 Hyundai Elantra into a partial convertible.

Making it back to the Oak Hill Inn and Suites in Canton, Mo., my stepfather Chester Tellier put a blue tarp over the back window before strapping it down to keep the interior from getting wet as rain chances were in the forecast throughout the weekend for most of Missouri.

Before heading back to Owensville Sunday morning, quite a bit of improvisation took place.

Oak Hill Inn and Suites General Manager Tina Uhlmeyer reached into her bag of tricks bringing out some surplus shower curtains checking if I could see through the plastic portion of them.

Being able to, the plastic was then cut out of two curtains before being taped together with clear tape to the outline of my back window.

Next was a brief test drive before heading south on U.S. Highway 61 towards Hannibal.

Having to apply some more tape to completely secure the plastic, we were able to hit the road.

Going no faster than 55 miles per hour, the plastic did its job keeping my boys Lane and Braxton dry in spite of a few rain showers before Palmyra and Hannibal.

Stopping briefly in Hannibal for lunch at Sonic, a quick check of the temporary plastic revealed no leaks and a continued dry park of the back of my car.

Back on the road with a full stomach, Mother Nature held off any forecasted rain while we were traveling Highway 19 from New London all they way down to Owensville.

For those that attend any future baseball games at QU Stadium, your best bet to avoid finding evidence of a foul ball shattering any glass would be to park in the gravel parking lot outside of left field.
