Four gridiron Bearcats earn All-FRC football accolades

Ending their season a win shy of reaching the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 2, District 2 football championship game, Jed Leeper’s Hermann Bearcats had four players earn recognition following recent coaches voting on the All-Four Rivers Conference (FRC) football team.

Junior Tayven Hopkins was an All-FRC 1st Team selection at wide receiver while senior Aiden Eikermann was an All-FRC 1st Team pick at linebacker.

Kohlt Witthaus also earned an All-FRC 2nd Team nod at linebacker while senior Trent Chasteen was selected to the All-FRC 2nd Team as a defensive back.

In addition to his selection at linebacker, Witthaus was also named an All-FRC Honorable Mention pick at quarterback.

Helping the Bearcats finish 2-9 on the season, Hopkins scored touchdowns against South Callaway, Sullivan and Cuba while recording a season-high 103 yards receiving on six catches against Cuba in the Class 2, District 2 opener back on Halloween.

Leading the team with 365 yards receiving on 33 catches and three touchdowns, Hopkins also caught seven passes for 81 yards against St. Clair.

Pacific’s Gavin Haddox was also an All-FRC 1st Team Wide Receiver along with Hopkins.

All over the place on defense, Eikermann reached double-digit tackles in seven of his 11 games.

He posted a season-high 21 total tackles (14 solo) on the road at Sullivan.

Other games he reached double digits in total tackles included week one against Montgomery County (20) and in the district semifinals against Montgomery County (13), St. James 12), New Madrid County Central (NMCC) (11), Owensville (10) and Pacific (10).

Of his team-leading 124 tackles, Eikermann had 85 solo tackles and 35 assists while also amassing 11 tackles-for-loss, two sacks, two fumble recoveries and an interception.

Eikermann had a season-high three tackles-for-loss against St. James while his interception came in first-round district action at home against Cuba.

He had a sack against St. James and Pacific while his fumble recoveries came against South Callaway and Pacific.

Joining Eikermann as All-FRC 1st Team Linebackers were St. James’ Zane Achterburg, Sullivan’s Chase Blue and Pacific’s Lucas McKinney.

Earning All-FRC honors on both sides of the football, Witthaus scored a team-leading nine touchdowns which included three against Cuba and two in games against Owensville and NMCC.

At quarterback, Witthaus was 79-167 for 860 yards passing with nine touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Witthaus’ season-high through the air came against Pacific with 193 yards on 16-32 passing with two touchdowns and three interceptions.

Throwing for 126 yards on 8-19 passing against Cuba, Witthaus also ran the ball 22 times for 258 yards rushing and three touchdowns. He also had a score through the air.

On the ground, Witthaus also led the Bearcats with 915 yards rushing on 145 carries.

St. Clair’s Nathan Short was the All-FRC 1st Team Quarterback while Pacific’s Seth Stack was the All-FRC 2nd Team Quarterback.

From his linebacker position on defense, Witthaus racked up 78 total tackles (52 solo) which included a season-high 10 tackles (seven solo) against St. James.

He also had a fumble recovery against Owensville.

Linebackers joining Witthaus on the All-FRC 2nd Team included Sullivan’s Mitchell Garner, St. Clair’s Xavier Tiepelman and Union’s Breslin Cordia.

Rounding out Hermann’s All-FRC football quartet was Chasteen finishing with 33 tackles (29 solo), two interceptions and a fumble recovery.

Chasteen’s season-high came against Sullivan with 10 total tackles (nine solo).

His fumble recovery came against South Callaway while he had an interception against Owensville and Cuba.

St. James’ Aiden Boone and St. Clair’s Jude Dierker were also All-FRC 2nd Team honorees at defensive back.

Two FRC football teams will see quarterfinal action this Saturday.

St. Clair’s Bulldogs will host Osage’s Indians in a Class 3 quarterfinal while Sullivan’s Eagles will host Festus’ Tigers in a Class 4 quarterfinal with kickoff set for 1 p.m., in both contests.
