HERMANN — There is a wide range of pay for the various officeholders of Gasconade County government. Most of those salaries will be considered for possible adjustment when the county’s Salary Commission meets Nov. 17.
Here’s a look at the various offices and the amount of pay:
Sheriff: Thanks to a change in state law in the last couple years, the pay of the sheriff is now the largest of all countywide offices. The state law tied the sheriff’s salary to that of a county’s Circuit Court associate judge, which is about $150,000 a year. That makes the Gasconade County sheriff’s salary $91,384. Linking the sheriff’s salary to that of the associate judge also precludes the sheriff from being a member of the Salary Commission.
Prosecuting Attorney: For years, a county’s prosecutor was the highest paid county government employee. But with the change to the sheriff’s salary, the Gasconade County prosecutor’s pay is second at $64,230.
Associate Commissioners: Northern District and Southern District associate commissioners are paid $35,547 each.
Presiding Commissioner: The chief executive officer of a 3rd-Class county, the presiding commissioner makes at least $2,000 more than the associate commissioners, as outlined in state law. In Gasconade County, the presiding commissioner’s post pays $37,876.
County Clerk and County Treasurer: These officeholders each make $52,500 a year.
County Collector: The collector’s position has a salary of $52,436.
Public Administrator: The public administrator’s position provides a paycheck of $31,600.
County Coroner: In Gasconade County, this position has a salary of $19,900.
County Assessor: The assessor’s position has a salary of $52,665.
County Surveyor: While an elected position, the county surveyor does not receive a salary; rather, the position’s compensation, from the state, is based on the number of monumentations and re-monumentations made during a year.
Also missing from the Salary Commission is the office of Circuit Clerk & Recorder of Deeds. Now a joint office with one officeholder, the circuit clerk/recorder is a state employee, paid through the courts system. Next year, county voters will be electing their first recorder of deeds. The County Commission agreed earlier this year to split the joint-function office. The new recorder of deeds will be elected in November of 2026 and will be a county government employee. The officeholder will receive two forms of pay – a salary estimated to be about $20,000 from the county and a fee projected to be about $30,000 from the state, depending on the number of documents recorded by the office.
The county’s Circuit Court associate judge, like the circuit clerk, is elected in a countywide vote but is a state government employee.
