Hermann Area Chamber of Commerce recognized Calvin’s Distributing on Thursday as this month’s business of the month.
Calvin’s Distributing, which has been in business for 49 years, distributes beverages in Gasconade, Montgomery, Warren and Franklin counties.
Last year they sold 1.2 million cases. Their portfolio is a mix of global staples and local brands including Hermannhof, Tin Mill, Wursthaus, Black Shire, White Mule and Pinckney Bend.
Their major partners are Dr. Pepper and Keurig.
Owner, Carol Scheidegger, talked about the business history.
“We bought it from Calvin’s father (Marvin) in 1957, he started as a Stag beer wholesaler,” said Scheidegger.
Calvin became a partner along with Carol in the business on Jan. 1, 1973,
In 1975 they secured a partnership with Miller Brewing Company.
“Calvin was delivering products in two places, one was in New Haven and (the other) he went into West End Tavern (closed down) and there happened to be Miller Brewing,” said Scheiddeger. “We filed an application and became a wholesaler for Miller Brewing Company.”
In 1978, Calvin and Carol bought the business from Marvin, allowing him to retire. Calvin’s quit being a beer wholesaler in 2010, their beer distribution went to Jefferson City.
They made the move to the beverage industry.
Calvin was inspired to create Calvin’s 1836 Root Beer because of his grandmother and wanted to give something back to his community.
He passed away on Sept. 30, 2021, leaving Carol to continue on his legacy.
Calvin and Carol have served the Hermann community by being a part of the Knights of Columbus and serving on the city council.
“He wanted to create something dedicated to the city of Hermann and the package contains the history and pictures of Hermann,” said Scheiddeger.
She made a comment on becoming the business of the month.
“Well it makes you very proud, we hope that we’re an asset to our community and hope to be involved in the things that are happening,” said Scheidegger. “Business is totally different than it has been in the past.”
