Hermann, Tri-County extend agreement for trash collection, monthly fee set at $15.91

HERMANN – Tri-County Trucking & Excavating will continue to provide trash collection service for Hermann for another six years under a contract extension approved Monday night by the Board of Aldermen.

The agreement calls for the company to propose a three-year contract and gives the city the right to renew the contract for another three years.

In the first year of service, which begins July 1, there will be no increase in cost to the city. However, the contract calls for a 3-percent increase in each of the next two fiscal years. According to the bid letter from Tri-County President Mark Engemann, the company will continue its practice of donating $8,000 to the Hermann Parks Board instead of purchasing a bond to ensure its performance.

Tri-County was the only hauler to submit a bid for trash collection services, noted City Administrator Patricia Heaney at Monday night’s first regular session of the month.

There are many different prices — covering a variety of containers and services — outlined in the proposal. But the key figures for residential and small-business collection show that a resident’s cost will be $15.91 a month and the basic cost to a business setting out an average of one or two containers per week will be $23.7 per month. Using three to four containers a week would cost $47.77 a month with similar increases per month as the number of containers increase.

In other matters, the BOA approved a pair of change orders for work being done by KJ Unnerstall on the Hermann Industrial Park sanitary sewer extension and wastewater collection system. One change amounted to about $10,800 and the other about $14,800.

The aldermen also acted on a number of motions:

• The hiring of Amanda Tallent as a lifeguard at the city swimming pool.

• Confirmed the appointment of Chris Liebach to the Park Board. Liebach is a coach of the Hermann High School girls’ softball team.

• Confirmed the reappointments of Mark Borzillo and Alicia Geers to the Parks Board.

• Confirmed the reappointment of Brian Chorley and Connie Johnson to the city’s Planning & Zoning Commission.

• Confirmed the reappointment of Gary DeWitt to the city’s Utility Advisory Board.

• Approved the 2026 swimming pool season schedule and fee structure.

• Approved Conditional Use Permit renewals for outdoor liquor consumption at 222 E. 1st Street (Doxie Slush); 413 Market Street (Missouri Trading Post); and 112 E. 5th Street (Zydeco).

• Approved a Special Event Application sought by the Hermann Area Chamber of Commerce for its “Here in Hermann” events at various downtown businesses on Market, 4th, Schiller and 1st streets. Vendors will be set up in front of businesses on those streets from 3-7 p.m. on the first Friday of June, September, October and November.

• Approved a Festival Event Application sought by Hermann Masonic Temple Association for Oktoberfest food sales in the Caboose area along 1st Street on Oct. 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25.

• Approved a Festival Event Application sought by Snackin’ Safari Ice Cream & Treats, LLC for pre-packaged ice cream sales on the Hermann High School lot during Saturday’s Maifest celebration.

Because Memorial Day falls on the BOA’s next usual meeting day, Monday, May 25, the aldermen will meet for their second regular session of the month on Tuesday, May 26. Prior to the 7 p.m. aldermanic session, the board will convene for a second budget workshop. The workshop will begin at 6 p.m.
