A part of four Four Rivers Conference (FRC) track and field team titles in Owensville Dutchmen orange and black, 2018 Owensville High School graduate Bryan Candrl was a part of yet another conference team championship in the state of Missouri.

Redshirting during the 2018-19 season at Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) in Joplin, Candrl began his collegiate track career competing during the recently completed indoor portion of the 2019-20 track season.

His indoor season began last December in the Crimson and Gold Invitational at the Harvey Dean Track in the Robert W. Plaster Center on the campus of Pittsburg State University (PSU) in Pittsburg, Kan.

Among three athletes clearing 15 feet, five inches, Candrl placed 10th based on scratches at previous heights.

Opening the 2020 portion of his indoor season, Candrl and his MSSU Lion teammates competed the weekend of Jan. 24-25 in the 2020 Northwest Open in Hughes Fieldhouse on the campus of Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville.

Clearing his first attempt at 14-02, Candrl finished in a three-way tie for 13th place in Bearcat land.

Moving into February, the Lions competed during the first weekend of the month back in Kansas at the PSU Invitational.

Posting his first top-10 finish of his collegiate career, Candrl cleared 14-10.75 on his first attempt placing him eighth among seven athletes that also cleared the same height.

“Bryan (Candrl) is a relentless worker,” MSSU Head Track and Field Coach Bryan Schiding said. “He has very high expectations of himself in every meet that he competes in.”

One week later, Candrl was able to compete inside his home track during the MSSU Lion Open at the Leggett and Platt Athletic Center.

Improving two places and over six inches, he placed sixth clearing 15-05 in the seeded division of the meet.

Over Valentine’s Day weekend, Candrl returned to Kansas and the PSU campus for the Fifth Annual Indoor Gorilla Classic.

Just missing 15 feet by a few inches, Candrl cleared 14-09 recording his third consecutive top-10 finish placing in a three-way tie for ninth place.

“He is a great role model of work ethic and doing the little things to better himself,” Schiding said.

In what turned out to be his final meet of the indoor season, Candrl cleared 15-00 to place 15th at the 2020 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at in Pittsburg, Kan., on the PSU campus.

“Bryan had a good season for a redshirt freshman,” Bryan’s father Matt Candrl said. “His conference jump was the third best of his life.”
