City of Gerald approves minor park improvements

Posted

Following suggestion from a resident last year, the city has dug a frog pond at City Park. The water hole will allow children to see the native amphibians in a natural habitat. A few additions to the pond will added by local groups in the near future.

Other additions to the park are being planned using volunteer labor and donated supplies.

This all piggybacks on other efforts the city has made to improve the local parks.

Ward 1 Alderman Kyle Guerrant is continuing his quest to improve the two parks in Gerald. At the March meeting of the city council, he reported that three new barbecue grills were being installed, one at Legion Park and two at City Park. They have since been put in place.

Guerrant then discussed the plan to install two new picnic tables on existing concrete pads near the old telephone office at Legion Park. There was some discussion as to whether new metal tables, which would be more durable, were worth the cost. Another option would be replacing lumber on some existing metal frames the city already has. It was decided to do a cost comparison with several different options before making a decision. New metal tables were favored, but the shipping cost on those items was prohibitive.

Guerrant spearheaded the new playground near the large baseball diamond last year.

Both parks in the city have seen a large spike in usage in the last few years. While the parks are operated on a very limited budget, these simple improvements help keep the parks up to date for every ones enjoyment.

A renovation of the Veterans Memorial will also be underway this spring.
