ST. CLAIR — Making history.

That is what Zach Bollmann’s Owensville Dutchgirl wrestlers were looking to do over the weekend during the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 1, District 1 Girls Wrestling Tournament hosted by St. Clair High School.

Entering districts with six grapplers, Owensville saw two of them make their history while qualifying for next week’s MSHSAA Wrestling Championships in Columbia at Mizzou Arena from Feb. 22-23.

Coming in as the overwhelming favorite at 170 pounds, sophomore Bailee Dare looked to punch her second ticket to state in as many years.

Matched up against Brentwood’s Helen Gwynn in first-round action, Dare took quick control of the match before posting a win by fall in :26.

Moving on to the quarterfinals, Dare’s next grappler standing between her and Columbia was Miller Career Academy’s Michela Alexander.

Dare only needed :19 to pin her way into the district semifinals beginning day two of districts.

Only one win away from her second appearance at state in as many years, Dare took on Parkway Central’s Lily Morales.

Scoreless after one period, Dare scored a takedown midway through the second period before going on to win the match by fall in 3:51.

Already guaranteed a spot at state, Dare went for another Dutchgirl wrestling first going for a district championship at 170 pounds against Sullivan’s Ruby Daily.

Scoring a two-point takedown at the 1:35 mark of the first period, Dare secured the first district title in Dutchgirl wrestling history with a win by fall over Daily in 1:49.

“It feels awesome to be the first district champion in Dutchgirl wrestling history,” Dare said. “It’s great to see my hard work pay off so far and now I’ll look to add a state medal to my list of accomplishments over the last two seasons.”

Qualifying as the lone Dutchgirl state wrestler last year, Dare will have some company this time around.

Winning just two matches as a junior last year, senior Kelby Schoenfeld will continue a storybook season as a state qualifier at 190 pounds after a third-place finish at districts.

Kelby is not the first Schoenfeld to compete on the Mizzou Arena mats.

Her older brother Blaine Schoenfeld was Owensville’s lone state wrestling qualifier for the Dutchmen back in 2019.

“It’s pretty cool that I’m now a part of history as the first brother-sister pair to qualify for state wrestling.” Schoenfeld said. “I’ve had quite the senior season as a (Four Rivers) conference champion and state qualifier. Now I hope to add a state medal to that list.”

Drawing a first-round bye at 190 pounds, Schoenfeld’s district tournament began in the quarterfinals against St. Clair’s Liberty McKenzie.

Trailing 2-0 after a first-period takedown, Schoenfeld scored a second-period reversal to tie the match before a penalty point gave McKenzie a 3-2 lead after two periods.

Starting the third period on top, Schoenfeld went on to pin the Lady Bulldog grappler in 4:31 to advance to the semifinals against North County’s Brooke Bennett.

Pinned in :35, Schoenfeld was sent to the consolation semifinals while Bennett went on to win a district title.

Union’s Destiny Vlcek was now all that was standing between Schoenfeld and a trip to state alongside Dare.

Late in the first period, Schoenfeld scored a takedown before eventually pinning the Lady Wildcat grappler in :40 punching her ticket to state.

Matched up against St. Pius X’s (Festus) Sophie Meyer for third place at 190 pounds, Schoenfeld used a first-period takedown and a third-period reversal to win a 4-0 decision and in turn avoid facing a district champion in the first round at state.

Blaine and Kelby Schoenfeld are the fourth set of sibling state qualifiers in OHS wrestling history along with the Fisher brothers (Casey and Tobey), Saebens brothers (Jack and Alex) and the Harrell brothers (A.J. and Wyatt.)
