Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) is a club for Owensville High School (OHS) students who are interested in marketing, finance, hospitality or management, and want to explore these career fields, gaining a better understanding of them.
Every year, DECA hosts competitions around the United States to bridge classroom learning with real-world business scenarios. There are two types of events at the competitions: written and role-play. Written events consist of a 20-page paper that is given to the judges a month before the competition and a visual presentation on their chosen event at the competition.
Role-play events consist of the competitor(s) speaking directly to the judges regarding an on-the-spot business problem that the competitor(s) are given.
Individuals get 10 minutes to prepare a solution for the problem, and teams of two get 30 minutes to prepare. The judges act as business professionals who require the competitors to think critically, communicate clearly, and defend their ideas, just like real world business scenario.
In Missouri, there are 161 chapters and 12 districts of DECA. OHS is in the fifth district along with 11 other chapters: California High School, Camdenton High School, Capital City High School, Cuba High School, Dixon High School, Morgan County R-2 High School, Osage High School, Rolla Technical Institute, St James High School, Tipton High School and Waynesville Career Center.
