UNION — Upset the Knights.
That was the goal late Monday afternoon for Tyler Ahring’s Owensville Dutchmen baseball team in the semifinals of the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 4, District 4 tournament semifinals against top-seeded St. Francis Borgia at Union High School.
Able to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth inning, OHS could not overcome a subsequent four-run bottom of the fifth inning before seeing their season end at 9-11 following a 7-3 loss to Borgia.
“I’m proud of our guys for never giving up against a very good Borgia baseball team,” Ahring said. “We have a hard-working group of kids coming back and the future looks bright for Dutchmen baseball.”
Owensville nearly had an early lead on the top-seeded Knights.
Looking to help his own cause, starting pitcher Trevor Abernathy recorded a one-out singe before Austin Gregory took his place on the base pads as a courtesy runner.
Stealing second, Gregory nearly scored on a Drew Baumbach two-out single but was thrown out at the plate to end the threat in the top of the first inning.
Pitching around a hit batter in the bottom half of the first, Abernathy kept the game scoreless through one inning.
Still scoreless in the bottom of the second inning, the Knights turned three hit batters, two hits and a walk into three runs for a 3-0 lead after two innings.
A scoreless third inning led to Owensville getting on the board in the top of the fourth inning.
Abernathy doubled to left-center field once again putting Gregory in the game.
Moving to third on a double-play ball, Gregory scored on a Javohntae Gates RBI single cutting the Borgia lead to 3-1 after four innings.
OHS’ offense wasn’t done going into the top of the fifth inning.
TC Fisher and Tyler Heidbrink both singled with Derek Brandt serving as Fisher’s courtesy runner.
Both came around to score on a Bryor Bogle 2-RBI single tying the game at 3-3.
Unfortunately for Owensville, Borgia came right back in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring four runs to advance to the district championship game.
In first-round action Friday against St. Clair, senior Brady Smith limited the Bulldogs to no runs on five hits and a walk while striking out four.
A Gates RBI ground out scoring Cody Linders in the bottom of the third inning scored the game’s lone run in OHS’ 1-0 victory.
