History makers.
That is one thing you could call Dustin Howard’s Owensville Dutchgirl wrestlers.
That is because they have already made history as individuals winning individual tournament and Four Rivers Conference (FRC) titles.
Now they can add their first piece of team hardware to their growing list.
Placing second out of 14 scoring teams in the Thundering Herd Wrestling Invitational at Buffalo High School over the weekend, Howard’s Dutchgirls earned the second-place plaque giving them their first piece of team hardware in the young history of the Dutchgirl wrestling program.
“These girls continue to amaze me,” Howard said. “They have done nothing but work hard and improve all season. I’m really anxious to see what they can do next weekend at districts.”
Liz Adams led things off for the Dutchgirls at 115 pounds bringing home a third-place medal following her win by fall over Holden’s Valerie Justice in 3:45.
McKenzy Echols also earned a third-place medal at 141 pounds winning a 7-6 decision over Marshfield’s Camryn Elliott in addition to a win by fall in 1:05 over Boonville’s Emma Pritchett.
At 149 pounds, Josie Gerlemann went 4-1 in her five matches to claim a second-place medal.
Pinned by Fulton’s Rilee Swaim in 3:29, Gerlemann returned the favor in her other four matches against Diamond’s Allison Calentine (4:26), Cole Camp’s Lacey Shoemaker (:43), Holden’s Gigi Jones (3:22) and Reeds Spring’s Kierstin Allen (:30).
Bailee Dare also went 4-1 in the tournament at 159 pounds to claim her own second-place medal.
Her lone loss came to Blair Oaks’ Halie Eaton by fall in 2:46.
Dare picked up wins by fall against Fulton’s Maddie Bright (2:33), Boonville’s Abigail Cunningham (:28), Holden’s Jordan Sylvester (:25) and Reeds Spring’s Alexis Harris (4:37).
Kelby Schoenfeld and Emily Krause also competed for the Dutchgirls at 194 pounds.
Schoenfeld had to withdraw due to injury while Krause scored victories over Schoenfeld and Diamond’s Kaylee Brown by fall in :41 to secure third place.
