SULLIVAN — Already owning a 7-6 walk-off victory over Salem during the regular season, Hannah Koppelmann’s Dutchgirls earned the right to be the home team again during their Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 3, District 3 tournament showdown Thursday night at Sullivan High School.
Taking a 5-4 lead into the top of the seventh inning, Owensville eventually saw Salem tie the game and go on to score four runs in the eighth inning before seeing their season after a 9-5 loss to Salem.
“We jumped on them early scoring two runs in the first and third innings,” Koppelmann said. “We only scored one more run the rest of the game and it just wasn’t enough.”
Pitching around a hit, a fielder’s choice and an error, Dutchgirl hurler Addison Wright gave her offense a chance to get an early lead in the bottom half of the first inning.
Halie Boyer reached base on an error before scoring when Paige Bossaller reached on a fielder’s choice giving Owensville an early 1-0 lead.
Shortly after Addison Wright was hit by a pitch, senior Katelyn Landolt doubled her home giving the Dutchgirls an early 2-0 lead over Salem after one inning of district semifinal softball form Sullivan Bank Ball Park.
Pitching around two more hits in the top of the second inning, Wright once again gave her Dutchgirl offense a shot at putting more runs on the board while keeping Salem off the scoreboard.
In spite of a scoreless second inning, Owensville still had a 2-0 lead.
Wright struck out the side in the top of the third inning setting up her Dutchgirl offense in the bottom of the third.
Anna Finley led it off with a double before Bossaller traded places with her on a RBI double.
Bossaller would score on a Leah Reed RBI giving Owensville a 4-0 lead after three innings.
Salem’s bats woke up in the top of the fourth inning to the tune of four runs on four hits and one error to know the C3D3 semifinal up at 4-4 at the midway point of the game.
Still tied at 4-4 going to the bottom of the fifth inning, OHS was able to reclaim the lead.
Wright led off with a single before Bossaller delivered a RBI double scoring Wright pushing Owensville back on top 5-4 after five innings.
A scoreless sixth inning put the Dutchgirl three outs away from a spot in the district title game opposite Sullivan.
However, Salem turned two hits into the game-tying run in the top of the seventh inning eventually sending the game to extra innings.
It was there that the Lady Tigers plated four runs on two hits and a walk which eventually ended Owensville’s season.
