Dutchgirls find win column at Mexico

A notch in the win column and finding the back of the net.

Those were two things that Zach Bollmann’s Owensville Dutchgirl soccer team hoped would happen last week in matches against St. Clair and in the Chris Hotop Classic at Mexico High School.

Falling 7-1 last Tuesday at home against St. Clair, Joleen Braun scored the lone Dutchgirl goal late in the first half to tie the match at 1-1 entering halftime.

Six unanswered goals by the Lady Bulldogs left Owensville still searching for the win column.

That ended Saturday afternoon at Mexico High School following an 8-0 mercy-rule victory by the Dutchgirls over Battle’s Lady Spartans in the third-place match of the Chris Hotop Classic.

Taking a 4-0 halftime lead, Owensville got a pair of first-half goals from Lily Reed to go along with a goal apiece from McKenzy Echols and McKenna Edwards.

Ending the match with 14:54 remaining on their eighth goal of the game, Owensville got second-half goals from Payton Busenhart, Anya Binkhoelter, Echols and Reed.

Reed’s goal completed her first career hat trick while Busenhart’s helped her and her older sister Destinee become the first pair of sisters to score goals in the history of the Owensville Dutchgirl soccer program.

Owensville goalie Elizabeth Adams faced no shots on goal earning her first career shutout.

Falling 3-0 to Festus in their tournament opener at Mexico, Adams made 25 saves against the Lady Tigers.

Monday night in a steady rain at Dutchmen Field, Owensville dropped a 2-0 decision to Blair Oaks despite nine saves from Adams.

Bollman’s Dutchgirls are scheduled to return to action tomorrow (Wednesday) at Crocker with a 4:30 p.m., start time before hosting Dixon’s Lady Bulldogs tomorrow (Thursday) at Dutchmen Field at 5 p.m.
