A pair of wins on the consolation side of the bracket.

Steven Kemp’s Owensville Dutchmen baseball team looked for them last week to close the annual Four Rivers Conference (FRC) Baseball Tournament after a 10-0 opening round loss to Union.

Defeating Hermann 5-1 in the consolation semifinals, Owensville took on St. James’ Tigers last Wednesday in the consolation championship game played at Sullivan High School.

Leading 4-1 after three innings, Owensville doubled their run total in the top of the fourth inning before putting seven runs on the board in the top of the fifth to eventually post a 15-1 victory in five innings.

Chase Weirich needed just 56 pitches for the complete-game victory allowing one run on four hits to go with a walk and six strikeouts.

After a scoreless first inning, the Dutchmen used a two-out rally to break the scoreless tie in the top of the second inning.

Weirich helped his own cause with a leadoff walk before being replaced on the bases by courtesy runner Colton Skiles.

Jaden Gerlemann was then hit by a pitch bringing Logan Bailey to the plate.

Lifting a two-RBI single to center field, Bailey gave the orange and black a 2-0 lead.

Logan Kleekamp also drew a two-out walk but was left stranded on the base paths to end the inning.

St. James cut the lead in half with a run on two hits in the bottom of the second inning before Owensville had an answer in the top of the third inning.

Zaiden Gates drew a leadoff walk before scoring on a Chris Allen RBI triple giving the Dutchmen their two-run lead back at 3-1.

Following an Elias Medlock walk with one out, Weirich lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to left field scoring courtesy runner Laine Baumbach helping Owensville to a 4-1 lead entering the bottom of the third inning.

Retiring the side in the bottom of the third, Weirich gave his Dutchmen offense a chance to add to their 4-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning.

Bailey and Kleekamp both walked before Landon Ely drove them home with a two-RBI triple bumping Owensville’s lead to 6-1.

Gates then drove in Ely with a RBI single making it a 7-1 Dutchmen advantage.

Allen then reached base for the third time in the game on a walk before Baumbach relieved him on the base paths.

Baumbach and Medlock later scored on a Weirich RBI single putting Owensville on top 8-1 after three and a half innings.

Ely delivered the big blow of the game in the top of the fifth inning when he cleared the bases on a three-RBI triple scoring Gerlemann, Bailey and Kleekamp before he scored on a St. James error.

Leading OHS with two hits each were Ely, Gates, Allen and Bailey.

Ely drove in a game-high five runs while Gates scored a team-high three runs.

Facing Rolla last Tuesday night, Owensville trailed 1-0 before a seven-run top of the third inning from the visiting Bulldogs eventually led to a 13-3 loss in six innings by the Dutchmen.

Owensville got on the board in the bottom of the third inning when Ely singled and scored on a Gates RBI ground out.

Weirich then walked and scored in the bottom of the fourth on a Jansen Loeb RBI single.

Allen crossed the plate for OHS’ final run of the game when he walked and scored on a Medlock RBI single.

Kemp’s Dutchmen are scheduled to return to action Saturday in Vienna with a pair of games at noon against Linn’s Wildcats before taking on the host Eagles with an approximate 2 p.m., first pitch at Vienna City Park.
