Echols, Dare earn medals for Dutchgirl wrestlers at Eldon

OWENSVILLE — Looking for some early Christmas presents in the form of medals, Zach Bollmann’s Owensville Dutchgirl wrestlers competed on Friday, Dec. 15 and Saturday, Dec. 16 in the Lady Mustangs Christmas Clash held at Eldon High School.

When the final match ended, Owensville found themselves with 87 team points good for an 11th-place tie with Blair Oaks out of 27 scoring teams.

Continuing her march towards being the first Owensville Dutchgirl wrestler to reach 100 career wins, junior Bailee Dare won five matches by fall in a combined time of 4:27 advancing her to the championship match at 170 pounds against Waynesville’s Mekenzie Moffet.

Seeing the match last just beyond her first five, Dare settled for a second-place medal after being pinned by Moffet in 4:43.

Going into the Wonder Woman Tournament later this week at Battle High School in Columbia, Dare just need four wins to achieve add another Dutchgirl wrestling first to her being the first Dutchgirl state qualifier and state medalist.

Senior McKenzy Echols gave herself an early Christmas present with a fifth-place medal at 155 pounds after pinning Willard’s Haley Autterson in 2:36 during the fifth-place match.

In addition to her victory in the fifth-place match, Echols scored wins by decision over Fulton’s Adrienne Johnson (5-2), Reeds Spring’s Lindsey Keithley (5-4) and Benton’s Isabel Foster (7-3).

Freshman Payton Busenhart won her first four matches by fall at 105 pounds before reaching the fifth-place match against Warrensburg’s Milyana Garcia.

Pinned in :47, Busenhart settled for sixth place at 105 pounds.

Junior Liz Adams also won her first three matches by fall at 120 pounds before a quarterfinal loss by fall in Cassville’s Breanna Gordon in 1:18 sent her to the consolation side of the bracket.

Defeating Warrensburg’s Avee Bevans 6-5 in her next match, Adams took on Ste. Genevieve’s Hollyn Zangaro in the fifth-place match.

Pinned in 1:57, Adams settled for sixth place at 120 pounds.

Losing her first two matches by fall, Makenzi Carpenter bounced back winning her next four matches by fall to secure ninth place at 110 pounds for the Dutchgirls.

Jenna Vandegriffe pinned Ste. Genevieve’s Launa Gegg in 1:01 leading to two more wins by fall in the consolation side of the bracket.

Reaching the ninth-place match, Vandegriffe took on Reeds Spring’s Skylea Sherer.

Pinned in 2:00, Vandegriffe settled for 10th place at 115 pounds.

Winning her second-round match over Ste. Genevieve’s Maggie Price in 2:59, Kylie Bates went on to lose her next two before drawing byes to place 17th at 135 pounds.

Merrick Blankenship had a tough draw at 140 pounds losing by fall to four of the top 10 wrestlers in her weight class at Eldon.

Wrestling with Echols at 155 pounds, Anna Carlin pinned Warrensburg’s Gwen Baker in 2:12 before placing 15th with a win by forfeit over Rolla’s Gabby Voshell.

Bollmann’s Dutchgirl grapplers will close 2023 later this week at the Wonder Women Tournament scheduled for Dec. 29-30 at Battle High School in Columbia with wrestling starting both days at 9 a.m.
