COLUMBIA — A solid showing to end the 2023 portion of their season.

That’s what was on the minds of Zach Bollmann’s Owensville varsity Dutchgirl wrestlers going into last week’s Wonder Woman Varsity Girls Wrestling Tournament at Battle High School in Columbia.

Seven Dutchgirls began the two-day event Friday morning looking to win enough matches to secure a top-eight finish and an individual plaque.

Senior McKenzy Echols and sophomore Madison Lewis came the closest to the top eight for the Dutchgirls as both ended up one win shy of individual hardware.

Receiving a first-round bye at 145 pounds, Echols pinned North Kansas City’s Lillian Tsuglis by 2:52 to advance to the third round of the championship bracket.

Matched up against Timberland’s Mina Himmel, Echols was pinned midway through the second period in 3:09 sending her to the consolation side of the bracket and a fourth-round bout with Belton’s Rylee Meredith.

Himmel went on to place fifth in the tournament at 145 pounds.

Pinning Meredith in 1:58, Echols then opened day two of the tournament Saturday morning with a win by fall in 4:16 over St. Clair’s Molly Brown in the fifth round of the consolation bracket.

Standing between Echols and a spot in the top eight was Marquette’s Kaylee Luker.

Pinned midway through the third period in 3:57, Echols wound up finishing in the top 12 out of over 30 wrestlers at 145 pounds.

Luker wound up placing sixth in the tournament.

Lewis also drew a first-round bye advancing to a second-round bout with Battle’s Synaya Lewis at 190 pounds.

Losing by fall midway through the second period in 3:16, Owensville’s Lewis was sent to the consolation side of the bracket where she drew a bye to the third round.

Winning a 7-4 decision over St. Charles West’s Evelyn Isom, Lewis needed one more win in the fourth round of the consolation bracket over Farmington’s Maya McKinney to advance to the second day of the tournament.

Pinning the Knightette grappler in 1:15, Lewis advanced to day two of the tournament and a fifth-round consolation bracket showdown with St. Clair’s Kaitlynn Van De Wiele.

Taking a 10-3 decision over her Lady Bulldog foe, Willard’s Harmony Moore now stood between Lewis and a spot in the top eight at 190 pounds.

Pinned early in the second period in 1:19, Lewis also settled for a top-12 finish out of nearly 30 wrestlers.

Moore went on to place third at 190 pounds.

Also surviving to day two of the tournament was junior Liz Adams at 115 pounds.

Drawing a bye to the second round of the championship bracket, Adams wound up on the wrong side of a 7-2 decision against Southern Boone’s Nova Porter sending her to the second round of the consolation side of the bracket.

Beginning her climb back towards hardware position, Adams pinned St. Charles’ Kayla Johnson in 3:21 setting up a third-round consolation bracket bout with Belton’s Africa Fabian.

Pinning her Lady Pirate opponent in 1:12, Adams then went on to win a 10-1 major decision over Jefferson City’s Audrina Houston booking passage to day two of the tournament in Columbia.

Early Saturday morning, Waynesville’s Josie Moody ended Adams’ tournament with a win by fall in 1:32.

Porter and Moody were both eliminated one win shy of the top eight at 115 pounds.

Jenna Vandegriffe won her lone match at Wonder Woman in a second-round consolation match with a win by fall in :29 over Farmington’s Ashlyn Robinson.

Vandegriffe’s tournament ended in the next round after losing a 7-4 decision to Marshfield’s Graclyn Hursh.

Lily Barker scored her lone with of the tournament at 130 pounds in the second round with a win by fall over Francis Howell’s Liv Gichuhi in 3:31.

Barker then suffered losses by fall to Olathe North’s Kaylan Hitchcock (2:42) and St. Clair’s Jossie Hopkins (2:14) ending her tournament after the fourth round of the consolation bracket.

Hitchcock went on to place third overall in the tournament at 130 pounds.

Payton Busenhart (105) and Bailee Dare (170) saw their respective Wonder Woman Tournaments end after just three matches.

After a first-round bye for Busenhart, she was pinned by Blue Springs South’s Killian Evans in :46 before losing an 11-1 major decision to Marquette’s Ryah Wurman.

Evans went on to place fifth at 105 pounds.

Sitting at 97 career wins entering the tournament, Dare looked to make Owensville High School Dutchgirl wrestling program history during the Wonder Woman by becoming the first orange and black girl wrestler to reach 100 career wins.

Leading 11-3 in the third period of her first-round match against Willard’s Emily Brixey, Dare was not able to hold on to her lead before being pinned in 4:37 and sent to the consolation side of the bracket.

Needing a win over Winnetonka’s Autumn Calvert to stay alive, Dare was not able to get it as she was pinned in 3:23 and eliminated from the tournament.

Both Brixey and Calvert were eliminated in the fifth round of the consolation bracket two wins shy of the top eight.
