Errors, missed opportunities cost diamond Dutchmen

An opportunity at revenge.

That is what was on the line last Thursday at OHS Field for Steven Kemp’s Owensville Dutchmen baseball team welcoming Hermann’s Bearcats for a Four Rivers Conference (FRC) and Gasconade County diamond showdown.

Leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning, Owensville saw Hermann plate four runs in the top of the second on three hits and three errors.

From there, the orange and black had base runners in each inning but simply could not get timely hits to push runs across before falling 12-0 to the Bearcats in five innings.

“We weren’t able to get timely hits to push runs across and we committed too many errors giving them extra outs,” Kemp said.

Dutchmen starter Matt Eckelkamp pitched around an error in the top of the first inning keeping Hermann off the scoreboard.

Jaden Gerlemann singled to lead off the bottom of the first before being retired later in the inning.

A Chris Allen walk along with singles by Austin Long and Landon Kramme went for not as they were left stranded at the end of a scoreless first inning.

Trailing 4-0 entering the bottom of the second inning, Landon Ely delivered a one-out single before he was caught stealing leading to the eventual end of the frame.

Hermann added to their lead in the top of the third inning on a Charlie Tyree two-run home run leaving the Dutchmen trailing 6-0.

Allen started a two-out Dutchmen rally with a single before a Long single put two on and two outs for Landon Kramme.

Kramme found the outfield grass for a single only to see Allen thrown out at the plate trying to get the Dutchmen the scoreboard.

Walks usually lead to trouble.

Owensville found this out in the top of the fourth inning when two of them eventually led to a Parker Anderson 3-run home run bumping Hermann’s lead to 9-0 entering the bottom half of the fourth.

Ely drew a two-out walk before he was retired on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Will Lauth.

Three hits, two walks and two hit batters led to three more Hermann runs putting the Dutchmen in a 12-0 hole needing at least three runs to send the game to the sixth inning.

Zaiden Gates led the bottom of the fifth off with a walk only to be caught stealing for the first out of the inning.

Gerlemann reached base for the second time in the game on a walk before a pair of fly outs left him stranded and the game over.

Eckelkamp took the loss allowing eight runs (four earned) on five hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

Trent Lampkin earned the complete-game win for Hermann allowing no runs on eight hits and four walks to go with two strikeouts.

Owensville’s JV Dutchmen led 1-0 after one inning only to see Hermann score 13 unanswered runs in their 13-1 loss in five innings.

Laine Baumbach walked and scored the orange and black’s lone run on a Logan Bailey RBI double in the bottom of the first inning.
