Julia Bouckaert, a student at Immanuel Lutheran School in Rosebud, was the first-place winner and recipient of a $100 prize in the VFW Post No. 6133 Patriots Pen competition.
Bouchaert was scheduled to be recognized during a Veterans Day assembly Tuesday at her school.
Recognized Monday at a community assembly for veterans were Owensville Middle School students Garrett Baxter, second place and a $75 prize, and Bryli Blaue, third place and a $50 prize. Receiving honorable mention awards for fourth- and-fifth-place respectively were Ashton Dams and Myah Angell.
The contest attracted 104 entries from the community. The top-finishing entries will be submitted to the district-level competition. School sponsors assisting VFW and Auxiliary members with the contest included Elisa Minnigerode at OMS and Joy Giedinhagen at Immanuel Lutheran.
