OMS’ Dutchmen see first-half leads disappear against Washington

Opening their respective seasons on the road, Owensville Middle School (OMS) Dutchmen basketball teams coached by Jarett Payne and Shane Hunt got to play on their home court Monday night at Owensville Elementary School (OES) hosting Washington’s Blue Jays.

Leading 15-6 at halftime, Payne’s seventh-grade Dutchmen saw Washington outscore them 27-7 in the second half handing them a 33-22 loss.

Tanner Mogensen led Owensville with 14 points and eight rebounds while Hunter Downey almost added a double double of his own finishing with seven points, nine rebounds two steals and two blocked shots.

Grayson Lairmore also pulled down three rebounds to go with a blocked shot.

Elliott Phillips rounded out the seventh-grade Dutchmen scoring with a third-quarter free throw for one point.

Kolby Steiger led Washington with a double double of 13 points and 10 steals.

Hunt’s eighth-grade Dutchmen took an early 3-2 lead in the opening minute of the game on a Charlie Katsov bucket and free throw at the 5:10 mark of the first quarter.

Unfortunately for the Dutchmen, Washington went on a 15-1 run closing the first quarter before going on to hand Owensville a 54-15 loss.

Katsov led the Dutchmen with six points to go along with four points from Gabe Medlock and three points from Jax Johnston on a third-quarter 3-pointer.

Tucker Sassmann and Brogan Clancy each added one point on first-half free throws.

Tyler Francis led Washington with 10 points and three steals.

Lafe Schweissguth just missed a double double for Washington finishing with eight points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Last Tuesday in Steelville, Hunt’s Dutchmen fell to the Cardinals 37-21 behind eight points from Katsov and five markers apiece out of Johnston and Medlock.

Ryder Wehmeyer added a fourth-quarter bucket for two points while Jesse Smith hit a fourth-quarter free throw for one point to round out the OMS Dutchmen scoring against Steelville.

At the St. James 7th Grade Tournament, Payne’s Dutchmen fell to St. James 47-24 in first-round action before coming up just short in the consolation semifinals falling 28-25 to Union.

Against St. James, Mogensen led Owensville with eight points to go along with six points each out of Downey and Lairmore.

Cohen Dare and Phillips each also added two points against the host Tigers.

Downey poured in a season-high 19 points against the Wildcats last Tuesday.
