OMS Dutchmen sweep Linn

Swept last Wednesday in their annual daytime doubleheader on the road against St. James’ Tigers, Owensville Middle School (OMS) Dutchmen basketball teams coached by Jarett Payne and Shane Hunt looked to put notches in the win column the next night (Thursday) in front of their home fans against Linn’s Wildcats.

Racing out to a 29-14 halftime lead, Payne’s seventh-grade Dutchmen edged Linn 14-13 in the second half to defeat the Wildcats 43-27.

Hunter Downey led the Dutchmen with eight of his game-high 13 points in the third quarter.

Grayson Lairmore also reached double figures scoring nine of his 10 points in the first half.

Tanner Mogensen scored all six of his points in the first half while Cohen Dare also added five first-half points.

Chase Heidbrink hit a second-quarter 3-pointer for three points to go along with two points each from Carson Fisher and Braylyn Reed.

Lucas Staton and Nolan Jost each hit single free throws for one point.

Ian Laughlin led Linn with nine points.

During a two-quarter eighth-grade game, Hunt’s Dutchmen put their first notch in the win column with a 19-9 victory over the visiting Wildcats.

Ryder Wehmeyer scored all four of his team-high points in the first quarter.

Netting three points each were Charlie Katsov, Jax Johnston and Jesse Smith.

Rounding out the eighth-grade Dutchmen scoring with two points each were Gabe Medlock and Tucker Sassmann.

At St. James, Payne’s Dutchmen fell behind 22-2 after one quarter before falling to the host Tigers 60-19.

Downey led Owensville with eight points and five rebounds followed by seven points and four rebounds from Mogensen.

Dare rounded out the Dutchmen scoring with four points against St. James.

Easton Huffman led St. James with 16 points.

Eighth-grade action saw the Dutchmen outscored 25-3 over the second and third quarters of their 44-12 loss to St. James.

Katsov and Johnston each scored four points to lead Owensville while Medlock and Smith each added two points.

Medlock grabbed a team-high six rebounds while Sassmann recorded a team-leading three steals.

Last Monday at home against St. Clair, OMS fell 52-17 in the seventh-grade game and 55-30 in eighth-grade action.
