Payne needs overtime for first OMS victory

Losing on a free throw with no time left four nights ago in Steelville, Taylor Payne’s Owensville seventh-grade Dutchmen basketball team went once again for their first notch in the win column Monday night hosting Washington’s Blue Jays at Owensville Elementary School.

Tied 11 times throughout the game, OMS found themselves trailing 30-24 with 2:15 remaining in regulation.

Using an 8-2 run in the final 2:15 of the fourth quarter and overtime, Owensville gave Payne her first coaching victory with a 34-32 come-from-behind win in overtime.

Five lead changes and three ties in the first six minutes resulted in the Dutchmen trailing Washington 8-6.

Scoring six of Owensville’s eight second-quarter points, Noah Caldwell helped the Dutchmen knot the game up at halftime 14-14.

Edged 10-8 in the third quarter, Owensville found themselves trailing the Blue Jays 24-22 with six minutes of basketball to be played.

Down 30-24 with 2:15 left, a Jansen Loeb bucket and four points from Eli Graham tied the game at 30-30 forcing overtime from Owensville Elementary School.

Trailing 32-30 with 1:25 left in overtime, Caldwell tied the game at 32-32 with two free throws eight seconds later.

A Nick Abel steal on a jump ball gave OMS possession with :36 ticks left.

Six seconds later, Caldwell put the finishing touches on Owensville’s first victory of the season.

Caldwell led the Dutchmen with 18 points, five steals, four rebounds and four assists.

Eli Graham just missed a double double with eight points and nine rebounds.
