Tuesday public works crew went throughout the town attaching signs designating an Historic Bike Loop. Most of these signs were attached to street signs already in place.
The loop is the brainchild of Bob and Kathy Foy, owners of the Rock Island Trail Bicycle Repair Shop, and the Rock Island Bloomers.
The loop is designed to get visitors off the Rock Island Trail to explore the town and all it has to offer. The route begins roughly at the Rock Island Trail trail head, continues west to Devine Drive, across to the school and then to Legion Park. From there cyclists will be directed through town to City Park and around Lake Charles. On the way back, the loop will head down Main Street in view of local churches and businesses, then crossing the highway to the north part of town passing the mural and Roadside Park along the way. They will ride past the 1910 Schoolhouse and the old roller mill before riding back to the trail head.
Along the way they can admire the architecture and diversity of Gerald’s buildings and houses.
A brochure showing the exact route and pointing out items of interest along the way.
Eventually, special signs will be made by the Bloomers explaining each point of interest along the way.
The purpose of the development of the loop is to capitalize on the local tourism the trail can provide. By giving visitors a guided path through town they will be able to take advantage of the shops and amenities the town can provide.
