VanLeer’s Dutchmen sweep hardwood tripleheader against Linn

Swept by Southern Boone’s Eagles in a boys basketball tripleheader last Wednesday, Cullen VanLeer’s Owensville Dutchmen basketball teams got another chance at a tripleheader sweep Friday night hosting Linn’s Wildcats at Owensville High School (OHS).

Winning both the freshman and junior varsity contests, VanLeer’s varsity Dutchmen were looking to complete the sweep against their Osage County opponents.

Answering every Linn run in the second half, Owensville kept their lead in double digits throughout the majority of their 61-46 victory.

Sparked by Chase Crosby and Layne Evans, VanLeer’s Dutchmen opened the game on an 11-2 run before ending the first quarter with a 16-7 lead.

Starting the second quarter on a 10-2 run, Owensville had their biggest lead of the game at 26-9 on a Layne Evans bucket with 4:50 until halftime.

Both teams traded buckets before a Jansen Loeb 3-pointer in the closing seconds gave the orange and black a 32-16 halftime lead.

Crosby led the Dutchmen with seven first-half points while Linn was led by Noah Hall with eight first-half markers.

Seeing Linn cut their lead to single digits at 40-31 with 1:55 for the third quarter, Evans pushed it back into double digits with a bucket nearly a minute later for a 42-31 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

Trading points with Linn throughout the entirety of the final eight minutes, Owensville was able to complete the tripleheader sweep of Linn’s Wildcats.

Evans came off the bench to lead the Dutchmen with 16 points, three rebounds, two steals, two assists and two blocked shots.

Charles Hazelwood and Crosby each also added 10 points to give OHS a trio of double-digit scorers.

Adding to his 18-point effort in the JV game, Jansen Loeb chipped in eight points four rebounds for the varsity Dutchmen.

Landon Ely canned a couple of timely 3-pointers giving him six points, five rebounds and two assists for the orange and black.

Brady Watson added five points followed by Keigan Glaser with three points and a team-high four assists.

Zaiden Gates grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go with two points while Eli Graham rounded out the Owensville scoring with a fourth-quarter free throw for one point.

Hall led Linn and all scorers with a game-high 24 points.

During junior-varsity action, Owensville used a 20-0 first-half run to help them pull away from Linn by a final score of 63-32 in the middle game of Friday’s hoops tripleheader.

Doing all of his damage in the first half, Loeb led the Dutchmen with a game-high 18 points with 15 of those coming on five makes from beyond the 3-point line.

Bryce Kramme also reached double figures scoring all 10 of his points in the third quarter to go along with three rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Logan Valley nearly made it three JV Dutchmen in double figures finishing with nine points and five rebounds.

Chase Weirich flirted with a double double finishing with eight points and seven assists.

Gates added seven points and a team-high six rebounds for Scott Lewis’ JV Dutchmen.

Henry Womack canned a fourth-quarter 3-pointer for three points while Chris Allen also scored both of his points in the fourth quarter.

Craig Laughlin and Cody Heckman led Linn with seven points apiece.

Starting the tripleheader with a two-quarter freshmen game, Owensville broke open a 12-7 game after one quarter with an 11-0 run to start the second quarter before going on to a 30-16 victory.

Kramme led Owensville with 11 points and four steals while Allen added seven points.

Valley chipped in six points to go with three markers apiece from Drew Chapman and Koen Brooks.

Hunter Bish and Heckman led Linn with three points each.
